Excalibur.
Once upon a time I thought that Excalibur and Ragnarok were related to each other (the weapons). I thought it was like a Soul Edge vs Soul Calibur kinda deal where the weapons were somehow diametrically opposed and that was why PLD got one and DRK got the other in FFXI.

We have a linkshell on Excalibur with 10-30 (but 120+ members, a few are alts though) people online at any given time, many are also posters here
Other members are randoms or friends from FCs/other games
Are hunts something that can be done solo/lowman? Cause when I become a grownup I find much more interesting the idea of doing that than grinding the tome of the month..

Some of them, yeah. B ranks (the non-aggressive big hunt mobs) will give you 100 seals per week if you accept the quest
A ranks can be soloed at 60 (for the level 50 ones at least)
S ranks require more people to kill in a decent amount of time, usually a ton of people go to those
The HW hunts are a lot stronger so I'd get a couple people for A ranks at least, so it doesn't take forever. For HW S ranks you usually have the whole damn server there

As for tomes there are tons of ways to get them to kinda break up the monotony of running expert

for s rank the whole server tried to show up, but some asshat early pulls cause it's funny. then everyone lags out and only like 2 people get fulls points.
Don't some of the older A ranks have weird gimmicks where you have to do magic damage and switch to physical (for example) where you likely wouldn't be able to do it solo? Maybe Ninja could because they have some magic skills.

For hunts there are also daily hunts you can do, they give exp and seals (the HW daily ones give you seals to help you gear up in i200/210 gear faster to get up to speed on newer content)
Saving up those seals helps get you a weapon and some gear quickly once you hit 60 (and get access to the HW B ranks). I think the quest starts in Idyllshire or at The Forgotten Knight bar in Ishgard
