You unlock the ability to add augments through a quest with L. I'm not exactly sure when it becomes available, but I think it's in chapter 4 or 5.
EDIT: To clarify:
1) Go to L's shop (once it is unlocked through the quest)
2) Create an augment slot on one of your equipped items (the amount of slots you can add vary per piece)
3a) Set an augment you got (from a field container).
or (if you wanna be fancy~)
3b) Create an augment. You can do this on the AM terminal (next to the shop in Armor alley)
and / or (which WILL happen)
3c) Realize you lack the items to make the best augments: go farm for hours! D:<

Why they removed party members leveling up with you even without using them I will never know. Esp since there are like 10+ members. The original Xenoblade had that feature.
Just capture one and teach it CUT.
It can also learn FLASH later.
Bring it with you when you go explore (i.e. not training pokémon or fighting a gym leader)
Also, in Gen 1 there is no way to remove HM moves from pokémon.
So don't teach HM's to any of your main team pokémon (unless it's FLY or SURF, those are pretty decent).
Also, by the far the best HM slave in gen 1 is Krabby.
It can learn CUT, SURF and STRENGTH.
My general way of using HM's in Gen 1 is as follows:
Oddish or Bellsprout: CUT / FLASH
Pidgey or Fearow: FLY Replace Oddish or Bellsprout with...
Krabby (once you can fish one up): CUT / SURF / STRENGTH or
Lapras: (you get one eventually) SURF / STRENGTH
This way you should always have only one (sometimes 2) slots in your party filled with HM pokémon.
If you have a flying type and teach it FLY, then it's just one slot for whatever HM(s) you need besides that.

When the Pokeball closes in the capture animation, hold down+b buttons. It was supposed to increase catch rate. There were tons of such rumours like that when the games first came out.
Got Mew to like 5% HP and still cant catch with 6 pokeballs >_<

I've had it work like a master ball with the right timing, 1st gen.
Considering I do it to pokemon at full health with regular balls (ha) I consider it golden, I don't care what others do.
However on my most recent playthrough I just gamesharked in some master balls, as it's easier than trying to press those buttons on a touchscreen (emulator on the phone, yo).

finished the game 2 sundays ago, after looking at how to upgrade to Ares 90 Skell, and seeing the best way is to cheese it, kinda felt unmotivated to follow along the game, except just wandering around and finishing random quests and stuff.
post game stuff doesnt seem too well planned either.
time to move to a new game till this one gets add-ons! (if)

Also apparently Prima has been working overtime to take down anything helpful for this game so people buy the stupid guide they made. People who bought it claim it's pretty bad too lol.

I don't plan on doing much end game stuff. I might finish quests I miss after the story but other than that I don't really care much. If "The Final Menace" is still up though... that *** is mine!
