Main story. It gives you HQ gear and dungeons drop gear.

The sidequests you do in the zones (you need to do certain quests for aetherial currents, some are locked behind other quests) will reward you with HQ armor, weapons, accessories

No but I heard that you can't do anything til the expansion is installed.
