I think we should bring back the downvotes but only for P&R threads.
Once a P&R thread OP gets a certain number of downvotes, instanuke.
If one is legit interesting it will stay alive long enough to get modlocked when it descends into the usual circlejerk.

That would be obnoxious to write with the way the code's currently constructed, for what would be nothing but a test of which side has more partisans.
General downvotes aren't coming back, ever. They're on the item comments (and screenshots, and I'm still pondering removing them there).
