Actually, it's a modified hexagun. Luzaf the Blackheart was the original wielder of Death Penalty. The story tells of it being capable of cutting through a ship with its "barrage of gunfire", something that a handcannon wouldn't be able to do with just one bullet. Balrahn later "seized" the weapon, and in his care it was likely modified to look less like a Corsair's arm.
It doesn't even resemble a corsair's arm at this point.

Also, Pirates (in this case, corsairs) were known to be rather creative with their weapons, and even customize them themselves.
But I also find it odd that SE used the name "Chasseur" (French for Ranger in loose translations) for the corsair 109/119 empyrean armor.

Anyway, it's round now and no amount of eraser tool will change that.

Even the characters arms and legs sort of have that hexagonal shape, because it's what the game engine is capable of. (lol)
You have to consider that it's not made for high detail and high polygon count since it's a massive multiplayer game which was coded in 2001 when the computers were a lot more "modest" on terms of memory and processing power.
The game was supposed to run on Windows 98 with 256MB RAM at the launch time.
