SE servers are in Japan and a lot can happen in the process.
Orange (Internet service in Europe I think) or something like that was having this problem not too long ago.
There's also the option of changing you DNS servers, but I wouldn't recommend it just yet.
Honestly I think if you gave your cable modem a cold reboot and then restart you system it would probably work again.

File check maybe, that would seem like the next step. I think those take awhile though.
Might just want to run checkdisk/scandisk (right click on hard drive, tools, check disk now, make sure to click the box that says automatically fix system errors) on whatever drive it's installed on first to check for errors. If it's C:, it'll reboot in order to do this.
Then have playonline or w/e run a file check.
