I think it's a matter of ownership rights belonging usually to a single or small group of people despite the fact that the developer studio or publisher might not be around anymore.

Oh I have stuff I can do, and if I could bypass what I was currently on in the game I'd probably hop on and play more, but I just find it annoying at this point to try as it keeps giving me ***.
