Basically, he spent so much time flustering over his works and re-editing them for the Queen's approval, that it was wasted energy to get physical with anyone - however, the pen name seems to be the "rule" that most teachers go with.
Whether it's true or not, or just some crap my English teacher taught us without a source, I don't know.
