I don't know anything about politics. I never really learned what liberal meant, but I thought "If I apply peanut butter liberally to my sandwich, then liberal must mean to do a lot of stuff". But then I read a thread that doing nothing is liberal? I don't understand.

I'd say I've done a pretty good job about not getting banned from anything, but I do have to come out and say that it's a bit odd how well-protected that particular thread is from any criticism.

Not entirely well-protected. The topic starter has a certain set of abilities that they can request of the thread and within reason, we can oblige these requests. So, it's actually the OP who is protecting their own thread.
