"Smelling" as in "Kali smells" doesn't refer to an actual scent, aroma, or stench. It's a figurative scent, such as the scent of fail or occasionally the scent of win but which it is is left to ambiguity so Kali can determine which it is. It's a way to see how Kali thinks, so far she's only responded somewhat negatively to it.
