That's a little different though, since it's sexual orientation and not gender. Seems like they wanted her to be with Batman or just felt it was forced to appease LGBT readers

Pretty sure Thor is a title that is applicable to anyone that carries the Mjolnir. The carrier is merely the vessel for it's power to which it decides the wielder.

It never was, for 40-50 years, but now it suddenly is because they chose to call the new female character 'Thor'.

That's exactly what it was before Marvel decided the guy that wielded Mjollnir was actually Thors reincarnation.
