In the past two days I've spent ~12 hours trying to portforward... yup, just portforward.
It made me feel like I didn't know how to at all, or I forgot some super important step that I did in the past that I'm not doing now.
Turns out that the new modem Time Warner gave me was the issue... I looked up the admin login for it and put it in bridge mode and everything magically works again.
the headache... *sigh*

If you're using one of the modem/router combos along with your own router you need to have it in bridged mode, or you're just going to have a really bad time.
That being said: port forwarding is easy, but if you were trying to do that instead of switching the mode, well that's probably why you were having a bad time.
I port forward for my ssh, as I'm cascading routers, and use an obscure port for ssh.
