"Know it all" is usually an insult toward how you carry yourself. He typical "know it all" (or rather how it should be used) is based on the way information is delivered. Usually it infers that the person in question acts too confidently and uses the information to show they are better than others, giving off an assholeish feeling to their words and making them less desirable to listen to.

Again: it shouldn't be an insult, as people should strive for knowledge.

Strive for knowledge, yes. But that doesn't give you the right to belittle others who do not have the same level of knowledge.

It'd be a crappy, arrogant, compliment regardless.

I understand what you mean Jet, I don't really find it insulting either (granted insults in general don't really bother me).

The whole "I'm amazing and better than you" thing I do towards those two is actually kind of a joke. Apparently one day out of earshot they mentioned that they think I'm pompous, and I was informed of it. So now pretty much anytime I'm even marginally better it reverts to the "Because I'm better than you obviously" for personal shits and giggles (the back row finds it funny as well though) because it gets under one guy's skin so much.

I don't deny that I can be pompous and a bit abrasive at times, but I do know my place. I never assume I'm the best at anything and I try to strive to be better at anything I do. It usually comes out of me when people are obviously not trying as hard as they should/can and then proceed to *** about their grade or something.

Edit for example:
Like we had a cardiology test that got turned to a quiz grade because half the class sucked it up. I was slightly annoyed that I studied my *** balls off to make a 96, and I was rather verbal about lack of sympathy for people who fail so bad it would boot them out of the class.

I work full time, I have a wife, bills, all the same ***they do and I can still make time to study. Not my fault they can't make the time to do the work for school.

Someone told me that the way I use grammar and punctuation makes me seem arrogant. I don't judge the way people talk, but it just doesn't make sense to me to speak in a colloquial manner that I'm not comfortable with.
