Is there any other trick though I'm missing for the steal to work besides steal+ gear?
Face the right direction, on the right moonphase, and be sure to have haste gear on so the steal goes faster, monster won't have time to react.

I wouldn't try stealing unless you're using login points for testimonys because then than it won't matter lol
You can probably walk in right now, sneak attack pop sushi pop hide then perfect dodge after he builds tp so his ws all miss and dancing edge spam to win easily with no meds. Use flee when he uses PD so there is no dmg taken

200 pts a test is silly though. They drop like flies off of the tonberrys I've been fighting and I just reset hate last night for 4k gil, lol. I'm saving my login pts for sky trigs or something more useful.

So 5 goblins or yagudo chasing you or standing around, you steal a platinum beast coin then pop hide. But if one of them has a bat pet or is a summoner with an avatar out. Those track by scent and hide does nothing
Quadav track by sound and orcs by scent, so hide doesn't work on them either
If you go into water Hide will drop scent/Sight guys can also do the same with a Deodorizer. Think it works with Silent oils and sound mobs too but cant remember. My days of stealing are long behind me.
Also for Maat enter naked (not sure if that does anything but its what I did) He will NOT aggro onto you allowing you to get behind him to attempt a free steal. If it fails hide wait 5 minutes and try again. DO NOT HAVE A WARP SCROLL!!!!!!!!!!<------ You will not be able to steal if you have one as the item you steal is a warp scroll.
