Random Thoughts.....What are you thinking?
I hereby proclaim there shall be no more studying today *throws everyone's books out of the window*
hey girl~! you can't be throwing away my comic books. whats wrong with you
I just got up to get a snack and stumbled on the computer's cable pulling it off, knocked over the chair, smashed a tv speaker on the ground and finally crashed into the wardrobe hurting my shoulder.
Final Destination Seha Home Edition. I need tech people.
Dad tried to build my mom a new PC, couldn't get it to work. He has tried a different mobo, psu, ram, even so far as to get a different cpu. He couldn't get it, asked me to give it a shot. Plugged the RAM and PSU in my machine, booted up fine, no errors testing RAM. Those are good, HDD is good (he used my SSD with windows 7, a different HDD with windows 7, and a spare HDD with linux as random testers in the borked machine as well). Anywho, I tested everything I could sans the CPU and mobo because I don't have an 1150 socket (wife's PC is ivy bridge, mine is an AMD). Problem I ran into: Soon as you switch on the PSU, it draws power and fans and ***turn on, without ever hitting the power button on the case. No post, no screens, nothing... just power to everything (can hear the HDDs whir up). Did this with different combinations of parts. I completely pulled the case plugs out, made sure nothing is shorting the pins to make it auto-boot. All looks good to the eye, but still just turns on. My guess is shitty mobo, any other theories? CPU is an i7-4790, mobo is an ECS B85H3-M. Dad replaced both through newegg with the same parts. Apparently it was doing the same thing on the other mobo, he traded mobo, still did it, traded CPUs, still does it. Edit: CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116987 Mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135355 You have to plug the DCCP into the HRW2 and then spin around and clap your hands three times.
Trust me I know these things. I have a problem. Nobody has helped me yet.
New case. I completely yanked the mobo out of the case and put it on a cardboard box when testing for shorts. No noticeable smells, no misshapen caps. This feels like a tech support.
Don't forget to fill out the ticket and record your hours. Be sure to send them the customer survey Nothing boots, no post, just a screen saying "No input." Checked D-Sub, DVI, and HDMI... even tossed in a GPU to no avail. Haven't even been able to get to the BIOS to *** with the BIOS yet.
Not my choice in parts unfortunately. I don't think it was sold as a combo, I'll ask next time I see him. Could just be BIOS/CPU incompatibility, but it is an 84W CPU that is the same architecture as the 4770 series just a higher clock.
My money is still on it being just a shitty mobo to begin with. Told him I would just RMA it and get a better brand. Edit: Memory is dual channel Kingston 16GB (8GB x2) 1600. Yes they were in the correct spots. I also tried single channel, triple channel, and quad channel with my 4x4 kit I have in my PC. Asura.Schizm said: » Well you said windows 7 right? You know Win7 marries the installation to the hardware? Bootleg windows 7 on SSD and the spare HDD, also tried a linux boot... no idea on the one he gave me with it, because I didn't even both with it. Asura.Schizm said: » Alright, does anything boot up? I saw on the motherboard that it does support smart fan. :/ You'll have to go into the bios and set that up. You'll have to calibrate the fan and maybe set it to manual and maybe quiet mode. Just as long as the ATX case, motherboard, cpu and memory work, you should be able to get the onboard video. I don't like the fact the mobo has a TPM to validate hardware. The mobo has a serial port? wtf :/ No post beeps at all (tried the speaker on my machine and it does work). I have no idea what he did with the first mobo, but I'm like 90% sure this one is DOA.
and the hdd/os is kind of irrelevant at the moment until you can get the thing to post.
Are you sure he didn't fry the boards with a misplaced footer? Is there a difference between fclga1150 and lga 1150? as the cpu is the former and the motherboard is the later, even if the pinout is the same, if there's a compatibility issue there, you're boned. I can't think of much else, short of seeing that the thing isn't supported by the board... Not much else you can do short of get a different board or cpu. (A bios update may give it the support, depends on why it's not supported, but you can't really do that unless you can get it to boot to something). Well I figured I would ask people with more expertise than myself while working on it. Was just hoping that there was maybe just something I missed.
I don't think I have ever run into a bad CPU, so hopefully a non-off brand mobo will fix it. @TPM: yeah, windows will typically have a driver for it from the OEM.
@serial: didn't read that far to see that it was a micro atx, but I guess in some uses of a micro atc they like to use them as little controller pcs to run things instead of a full tower, so I can see why on some boards they would have it. Time to start my class work for the summer, calculus and cultural geography, woo! Asura.Schizm said: » Hate to be a fanboy but...ASUS.... <(O.o)> Yep...ASUS. I dunno... as sorely disappointed in the performance of the first series FX (I'm running an 8120), I will say I have never had an issue with an AMD build, but always seems to be something with an intel. Probably just random luck on that part. But with news of the new intels being soldered into the mobo (BGA instead of LGA), makes me think I might just stick with lesser performance to save some money and headaches with AMD. |
