There was someone I hanged out with in high school that was tomboyish. She was attractive but was more like a softball girl. She liked a few guys in the group that hanged out but they didn't feel the same way back.
I just can't see that many situations unless it's family friends, or the fact the person has alot of friends of the opposite sex that would bring this situation up.

is this a global thing or just 'murica spilling over the internet? I think a lot of people in our culture are unhappy (maybe just the internet vocal fedora'd gentlemans), unrewarding lives or disappointing others or whatever, and I think we've been taught 1man+1woman=happiness so that makes for awkward relationships with anyone of the opposite secks not interested in banging

I guess it's a global thing, but it feels like people just get more and more unhappy with their lifes in general over the last years ~~ Maybe that's just because people are constantly connected now and sharing every thought they have somewhere on the interwebs iunno
On top of what Headstrong said, sometimes females are afraid to be upfront because they'll lose a friend over it. The whole "a guy isn't talking to you because he wants to be your friend, he just wants to bang/be with you". If a guy is like that they probably aren't worth the time. But, yeah, there's that.

I definitely have a strong mistrust of people on top of a sever difficulty to decypher their behavioural patterns, however I cannot possibly imagine that there are people that are just evil for pure sadistic pleasure. At least not on a large scale.

Also, hints are not always to obvious to everyone. "It's obvious I want more." Communicate! Only real way to be obvious. If you can't for whatever reason, well that's a whole different subject. >.>
