It's one thing for mistreatment of prisoners to have happened back in the Middle Ages, but I'm not so tolerant of it now. And then I read that abortion is illegal in NZ unless there are special circumstances. Oops, dealbreaker! I believe that the government has no place telling people what they can and cannot do with their own bodies. I wouldn't choose to deliberately moved to a country that went against that belief.
So now who should I fixate on to daydream about when my coworkers drive me batty? Finland looks nice, except that 76% of its population is Lutheran. I'd prefer a mostly non-religious country. Japan looks nice, I especially like that it doesn't allow itself to declare war, but since our grandfathers nuked it I'm not sure about nuclear fallout. How safe is it? Are we more likely to get cancer there? I like Canada, but I'm not sure how different the government is really. What about Sweden? Switzerland?

As for mistreatment of prisoners, it's pretty naive to think that that doesn't happen EVERYWHERE.
