Well to you anyways.. I've been playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent and I, out of the middle of nowhere, came to the conclusion that horror/survival games tend to induce fear more readily in me than any horror movie ever has. If you are the same way, I'm curious why you suppose that is? The only thing I can even come up with for an answer is that with a movie you're simply watching it, you're not expected to react to the situation as you are in a video game.. However in the game, you are part of the experience and are forced to react to the situation.

In games you have entire control over your character. In movies, everything is predetermined to happen and you have no influence on the outcome.

Resident Evil 4 and Eternal Darkness are my favorites. Eternal Darkness broke the 4th wall to *** with you all the time. You tried to anticipate it, but it always *** with you in the end.

RE4 I had to kill an Iron Maiden with a knife. 100% out of ammo, almost dead. I've never been so on edge in a game.

When you're controlling a character, you feel more like you have their life in your hands. You form a more powerful emotional bond, and if the game is good enough you become so immersed in the world that it could feel real. If you're being chased by a monster that you can't kill and are in danger of imminent death, (like in Amnesia), then you're definitely going to get a strong sense of dread.

When I watch a horror movie, I usually don't get scared. Sure, sometimes there's one of those cheap jump scares, but I can never say that I truly feel a foreboding aura of fear. In Amnesia, I was on the edge of my seat with my heart about to fly out of my chest on more than one occasion.

Horror games and movies aren't really my thing, I get scared way too easily. :(

Only game I ever tried playing that could possibly qualify as a horror game, would be Alone in the Dark (idr which one anymore, think it was 2 but not sure), and it scared me to the point where I had to mute it. Then again I also have to mute the TV if I'm watching a scary movie.

Survival horror games are my favorite genre of games ^_^
Silent Hill is pretty scary...yes Eternal Darkness I remember that one...

Scary movies do not really frighten me but the games do haha...I guess its because in the game I can die or game over lol.

to answer the OP's question...horror video games are scarier because if how the immerse you into the gameplay. Sure, moves do the same thing, but you wouldn't be actively engaging the scary plot lines.

This is a weird question.

Quote:
Are horror games scarier than horror movies?

Yes and No.
Situational is situational.
Depends on the game and the movie.

I went through a real phase of horror games like Silent hill, Fatal Frame/Project zero, Clocktower 3, Forbidden Siren. I'm the biggest wuss ever but scary things really intrigue me.

Games are definately scarier because you can't look away. You have to be brave and walk into the freaky room yourself. Some of those games are really good at creating that atmosphere without doing much. I dunno if it has anything to do with a lot of them being Japanese. I find Japanese films way scarier than American. Films like Ringu I'm still scared of almost 10 years since watching it.
