Wikileaks and Anonymous

That's what I was trying to get across to someone on facebook who is very pro hacking/anonymous etc. I find it a bit annoying that /b/ has latched onto this too, it means it's just going to get worse and lose any relevance the leaks provided. I am sad, but what's done is done I guess. In a few days it'll probably be over. Someone as smart as Assange no doubt has all the rest of his leaks set up for automatic rollout even if the site is taken offline or he's no longer personally around. DDoS's are just assumed, these days.
He's supposedly sitting on thousands of documents detailing highly questionably legal dealings of "a major US bank" during the housing bubble and bailout. (Most think it's Bank of America.) I don't see how they can possibly stop their release. He's bragged that 100,000+ people already have full copies of the current cables if absolutely necessary. Access to the actual Wikileaks site is pretty irrelevant when this stuff replicates at the speed of light. Access to the actual Wikileaks site is pretty irrelevant when this stuff replicates at the speed of light. Exactly. Just like they placed some of their servers in America so that if they came down it could be interpreted as a statement by the government against Wikileaks. I think Assange and Wikileaks have planned everything out to the extent most people cannot fathom. They probably have many plans ready to keep their exposure in the media from dying down. I think Anonymous will get bored. Edit: To those who didn't read the Guardian interview of Assange and interpreted my remark: "Just like they placed some of their servers in America so that if they came down it could be interpreted as a statement by the government against Wikileaks." as a personal interpretation of what happened. It was my interpretation of what Assange said. Here is a little bit from the interview. Quote: "Annoying as it may be, the DDoS seems to be good publicity (if anything, it adds to your credibility). So is getting kicked out of AWS. Do you agree with this statement? Were you planning for it? Thank you for doing what you are doing. Julian Assange: Since 2007 we have been deliberately placing some of our servers in jurisdictions that we suspected suffered a free speech deficit inorder to separate rhetoric from reality. Amazon was one of these cases." He also has a widely-shared, heavily encrypted file out there called "insurance.aes256" which is thought to contain all the most damaging leaks that were left out of previous releases for national and individual security reasons. (Or contains unreleased leaks.) It's 1.4GB in size.
I'm sure that if something happens to him, we'll all be getting the proper key to unlock it. Or it could be one hell of a computer virus, I guess only time will tell. I just can't wait to see what is going to come of this honestly.
Coporate-Political corruption would be the number 1 thing that would peak my curiosity though. The State and Justice Departments have publicly said that linking to or discussing the actual content of these (still technically classified) leaked documents will be grounds for disqualification from government work. There are members of the FFXIAH staff who are government contractors, and for whom such a thing would be devastating to their livelihood. This site is not a full-time job for any of us, and we will not use it as a hill-top battlefield to die on, in some ideological war with the government. Please respect the delicate situation and try to keep commentary about the leaks within those boundaries. Everyone involved is kinda treading on new ground, here. Pardon my ignorance on the whole subject, but what supposed classified information was leaked to the public?
I wish I would have had a cordial explanation like that last time we had a thread about this rather that a big ole stfu stamp lol.
But I digress. Have you looked into any of the more recent leaks Jaerik? I still haven't myself but I'm just not sure if there are any that would make me all that curious as of yet. It's hard to argue that any document readily accessible to the 3 million people with level "Secret" clearance is actually a secret at all. But as long as that's still its technical designation, that argument won't help us. I'd prefer you just Google it, for the above reasons.
It's all over the place. The New York Times would be a good place to start. I might start to sound like a conspiracy theorist here, but here is what I think this is leading towards.
Anyone who has actually ever read the cables will tell anyone that the information contained in them is common knowledge, could easily be deduced, etc. Yes, there is certainly the legal matter of said information was obtained. Yes, people are bringing up questions about a site like this. Ultimately though I'm starting to believe that this whole mess is going to be presented as evidence towards regulation of internet legislation and more immediately be used to push this: Officials Push to Bolster Law on Wiretapping Quote: Law enforcement and counterterrorism officials, citing lapses in compliance with surveillance orders, are pushing to overhaul a federal law that requires phone and broadband carriers to ensure that their networks can be wiretapped, federal officials say. FCC meets on Dec. 21rst and will undoubtedly mention this (Wikileaks) issue. We're not actually allowed to openly discuss this at college.

I know this information was supposed to keep a closed lid to begin with but to begin censoring people on every social circle is not only futile, but downright ridiculous.
