stop hatin' on a console that had a life span of nearly a decade

I've had my ps2, the same one, for 7 years now. No repairs, no returns. How many Xbox users can say that? Or PC users for that matter?

I have several pc's that fit in that category, but it helps when they sit in a closet for 5 years :D

Well, I have played on every system this damned game has been ported to... I like them all for different reasons.

I drag the PS2 around for LAN parties-- What I have found with this update is that-- it would apply to a PS2 that has a driver version of 1.11 and not to a system with driver version 1.10.

You can check your version by using the indicated green triangle button on the Browser/System Configuration startup screen.

Can anyone confirm/disprove this?

It does not appear we can update the driver software.

driver for what? your hdd?

speak for yourself.
You get mad when people bash your preference in a system yet you do the same to others.
1. name another system with that life span.
2. I don't hate on people based on what system they use, I hate on people because they are stupid in the reasons they chose their system

I have no hate in my heart for the ps2, it is one of the greatest consoles ever produced. Why? Because of it's fantastic 3rd party support. Which now is non-existent.
1~3 releases a month doesn't count as a console still living, it's a swan song.

MMO's have a place on consoles but just give up the ghost with the PS2. We go through this all the time. I'm sure you adequately macro in all of the useful gear for all of your jobs with the snappy and responsive menus of the PS2 you also keep such a high frame rate and resolution in all areas to keep up with whats going on. EG linkshells are crumbling because their PS2 members can't log in.

obviously you do or you wouldn't keep bashing it, your words fall on deaf ears, go elsewhere.

short of the crappy lenses they used (which weren't meant to last for long periods of time, or obviously play dvds regularly) ps2 is a badass system, however it can be a *** to take one apart and replace the lense with those flimsy *** data cables.

It's really annoying having a tech issue on a PS3 and having trolls complain about people using a PS2. Be grateful people on PS2/PS3 play this game as it extends it's shelf life. If you aren't going to be helpful stop trolling this forum and go look at what's new. I wouldn't be trolling xbox forums I could actually play ffxi atm.

For anyone having issues and trying to bypass SE; I've deleted ffxi and reinstalling from scratch. So far it's working and only 10 hours left on a cable modem lol.

IMO if you arent part of the solution you're part of the problem.

Trolls who play on other platforms (mainly pc users, since x-box users shouldnt dare mock the scenario in fear of their own karma induced RRoD) should remember that they may have friends ingame this has affected.

This is a serious ignorance on SE's part. I got the same idea as winsome, but I cant remember that last time I saved my macros to the server and I dread having to redo them. Im on a ps3 and this annoyance has also happened to my system.

Winsome, please keep us updated and see if this actually works for ps3 users.

it's obviously a SE problem, may as well just wait for them to fix it instead of wiping your system clean for a possible fix.

Well guys, people with ps2/ps3 issue, start reinstalling from scratch..

Latest SE news:

"2010/12/07 23:30 from FINAL FANTASY XI Concerning the issue where players are unable to complete the version update and receive a message stating that there is not enough free space on the PlayStation BB Unit, the matter is still under investigation, but it appears that it could require a considerable amount of time to implement a solution.

In the mean time, if you are experiencing the issue described above, performing a clean installation of FINAL FANTASY XI may resolve the issue for you.
* Please be aware that a clean installation will reset all macros, map markers, and settings to their default values.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."

5:45 hours left. Probably going to wake up praying I don't get disconnected and that my last macros saved to the server were recent!

they said may fix it, but that's a standard solution to any problem.

Like I said earlier I'd like to know what caused some people the error, then again I enjoy troubleshooting :P

Not sure if the previous 5 pages mentioned this but you could try using a PS2 emulator to run FF11. pcsx2 runs pretty good on a decent PC (mine is a 2.66Ghz Quad-core)

The best thing is that you can get high res for many ps2 games on that emulator. That's how I'm playing FF12 and it looks beautiful in 1080p. The ps2 graphics for 12 really looked bad. Apparently really hi-res art is on the game disc...

the only reason to do this is if you really really don't want to invest in the PC version of 11 even though it's really cheap... and if the only option on ps2 is a reinstall.

Hope things work out.

I can understand if a ps2 HDD fills up and it causes this since its size is so limited, but im on a PS3, errors like this should never even exist. The memory space differences between the 2 is pretty vast considering.

emulators never play right, and quite frankly using an emulator to play ffxi is just silly and not worth the effort it takes to configure it

on another note this is the only character I've ever used to post on these forums, only one I'll ever post with and you know nothing about me or my work...

a ps3 that can support the game isn't that much bigger, 80gb is still very small, and somebody stated earlier that the ps3's ps2 allocated hdd space is 20gb, which is half the size of a ps2's.

this error obviously isn't a size problem, even though that's what the error states.

my 60gig "(Y)+3" plays ffxi just fine.
downloaded the update fine too.
i waited until after all the typical bloat and congestion because it's easy to find better things to do on a day like this.
mulling over the shitty update always works out to be a bad day for me so I usually take off for a few days until after the update,

i'd imagine this error is just due to how much corrupted and/or useless data is sitting on your ps2. especially if you've not had to do too many fresh installs on it in the first place.

Except it isn't, because I clean installed less than a year ago and have absolutely nothing else on my PS2 BB partition. At all. And for some people it's affecting multiple units. I do wonder why some people aren't affected, though.

i hope they can figure it out soon. as much as a clean install may fix it, i'd hate to lose my macros. not only that, but the last expansion that required the use of the discs was wotg a couple years ago, so i'd have to dig around through boxes just to find the cd's to reinstall x.x
