Not sure if this is any help, but before running the update on my ps2 I went through and deleted all of my screen shots, messages, etc to free up more space. I ran the update and it downloaded with no problems at all.

Sadly deleting the messages and screenshots have nothing to do with this issue. These are stored into the "PlayOnline" (1GB) partition and if you tried to update without deleting them you would have the update completed and you would still have your screenshots.

As I stated earlier, I did the update with just FFXI/RoZ. I tested it, worked fine, no lag actually, was awesome lol, but now I need all the expansions, I uploaded CoP from the disk, but as I continued to ToAU, right before it finished it says

"Installation failed.
An HDD with at least 8192 MB of free space is required to install FINAL FANTASY XI.
Please restore data on your HDD by following the instructions in its accompanying documentation."

So right now I can do an update with just RoZ/CoP but without the other 2 expansions. This is kind of odd now.
I'll see if I figure out more and find another way to install.

Also, SE just posted another note about current known issues but for in game. Hopefully in a few hours they will figure something out.

You are one of the lucky ones I guess.

It is not even a space issue like Mariane says.

My HDD have 24G left but after the file check it says can't update needs to have 1G of HDD space. :(

Do the PC moaners actually have lives? If your PC version is working, go play it. We know the PC version exists, we want to play on PS2, obviously. Shoo, shoo!

Fenrir.Mariane said:

Mine seems to say that meaning "any time over 12 hours". I'm performing another clean reinstallation now, hoping I'll finally get to patch soon successfully.

Thanks for posting JP screenshots by the way, it's heartening to know that the fix is working on both sides as I also play that version. If you don't mind, can you confirm which discs you use to reinstall - the standalones or a Vana'diel Collection? I only have ToAU and WotG via the Vana'diel Collection 2 disc so I'm really hoping that the problem doesn't turn out to need me to somehow conjure up the standalones. My other PS2, which I never updated to have those two expansions and installed from the standalone discs ages ago, can patch just fine - but that's not much use when I want to play in later zones :)

Ok, since you messed it up real hard, do it right this time:

Go to the PS2 browser screen and DELETE the Final Fantasy XI game from the icons list. It will warn you about macros being deleted, but you deleted them already when you did the clean install thing.

Start PlayOnline, choose install, insert the first of your FFXI discs.

Authenticate the DNAS crap and install. Once completed go back to PlayOnline and repeat the process for the next disc.

The FFXI icon will be re-created on the HDD. Don't worry about that.

Now after you testing it for us, it's clear that one shouldn't try to update online until *all* expansions are installed as it are likely to cause this space problem.

I wonder why they don't expand the FFXI partition again, like they did in 2003 when it was 8GB and was expanded to 10GB. Maybe it's due how the PS3s installs work.

PS3 creates an "virtual" 13GB PS2 HDD inside of a large file on one of it's native HDD folders.

I used the 2006 vana'diel collection (Game + RoZ+CoP+ToAU) and an standalone WoG disc as second step. I remember posting that earlier on this thread. But it's a bit difficult to read all the thread lol.

Actually the reason Im doing 1 by 1 is too see on which expansion they messed up, which by the looks of it, its ToAU cuz I have everything but ToAU uploaded at this point and its downloading with no size issues.

Its probably a mess up based on the coding on that expansion because its the only one asking for more space.

*Edit* But thats just for my system. Oh and btw, I did delete everything. Im just really bored.

I'm not sure as to why the HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE, and completely unnecessary "lolPS2limitations" comments havent stopped by now. This thread is clearly for PS2/3 users helping each other trying to get this ***to work, ppl really need to grow up, go play the game instead of bickering ppl here that are just simply trying to do the same.

Anyways, real reason im posting to update my status a 80 gig PS3 user, i started since yesterday morning doing a clean instillation...i didnt end up logging in the til the whee hours of today >.< i dont like keeping my PS3 on this long either, but of course i had no choice. So while it looks like PS3 users like me are ok for now (although devoting an entire day just to "fix" is anything but ok in my eyes), my heart goes out to all you PS2 users that have a system that no longer reads discs. Its the only reason i used my PS2, was for FFXI, sooner or later that system will just no longer read discs :/ no matter how you take care of it, so for all you that are under this situation i really hope SE can come up with an alternative way to fix this w/o forcing ppl to do a clean installation.

I really hope we dont lose a player base of FFXI due to what seems like an avoidable mistake/glitch. GL to you all that have yet to get this to start working.

Good to know SOMEONE remembers us cripples out here ; ;

Really hope they fix this so I don't have to do a clean install. My PS2 doesn't just not read discs, it doesn't even spin them anymore, so um... yeah lol a clean install isn't an option. ; ;

It took a full 16+ hours to reinstall the game, but I FINALLY was able to get back on. I wish you all the same amount of good luck.

Its already taken me 30 hours to re-install and update and its still going. This really shows how much SE supports xiv more. I cant wait till March for ps3 release. lol

PS2 user here with some.....um update info lol
well did the clean install....and got up to 15% of the checking files....b4 congestion booted me off....2nd time around got 11%...and each time there after I get less then 5% b4 I am booted....sometimes I dont even finish the preparing part....but from the 21K+ files down to nearly 12K woohoo...this means progress? LOL then they still need to be uploaded for KUPO sake....I do not remember congestion ever being so bad that 24 hours after an expansion or update or anything...that I would routinely get booted a day after the fact....I have been attempting to download since 130pm on the 7th.....around 6pm I tried the clean install and at least I do no get the 1010 memory error anymore huh? ;p

currently my time remaining is at 9:58:35 lets hope it does not keep going backwards! yes backwards sometimes I notice it goes up instead of just counting down.....oooo KUPO

I got the actual PS2 to update with no issues but its the long way.
After messing with the PS3 and reading their notes/info thing on why it happened I figured I'd try.

If your PS2 can still reads disks and you have them, there is a long way to do it, but it worked so far.

Instead of actually installing all the expansions I did it by installing FFXI/RoZ alone. This will download and install the biggest portion of the information in the game. Because of the way the download is designed, it downloads everything at once that its going to be overwriten, then it installs it and frees space once again.

After downloading FFXI/RoZ (the biggest portion, I tried installing the 3 other disks, ToAU was apparently still too big once I uploaded CoP, so instead I uploaded WotG. I let the system download all the crap and install it. Since some of the expansions share folders this help manage space. Lastly I did ToAU in case it didnt work since I honestly dont even go there anymore, but after all this it had enough space for ToAU and the final update.

If you feel like trying it because you really need to play, go for it. It might work like it did for me. If not, wait on SE and see if instead of DL everything ~> overrite changes it to a way so that it starts to replace files immideately as it downloads.

After reading Aeil's post about how s/he feels Im curious.
Is there a difference in the scripts/programming between the JP/NA/EU versions?

On regards to the update, Im doing the clean install, all was going well till 76% and I ended up getting d/c'd -.-
Got to start all over now... great...

Sorry, I had a rough night and that came off a bit assenine. Well to be honest, I do not know if the scripting is the same or if they have the same issues, and all in all, i can't read JP so i have no idea what her SS is about. Also if that were PS2, how did she SS the log in screen like that? As far as i know, ps2 can't do a SS til you're in game, only windower can SS that screen.

I'm a PS2 user and I've been on standby since Monday to see if SE comes up with something helpful. I've been reading this thread and others on BG to see how other players are dealing with the problem.

So far it seems it worked for some and not at all for others. I've played for 6 years and I would really hate to lose all my markers and macros with that re-install fix. (Yes I know, shame on me for not saving them but I didn't even know it was possible on PS2 until recently.)

My worry however is that SE hasn't given any recent update about working on a solution on their support center website. Does that mean that the last recommendation about the clean install is their final solution? ; ;

I apologize, my comment was kind of uncalled for, I guess i could have asked is this a JP ps2, and if it is the same as the NA version. Last night was.. bad, and I suppose it reflected in my comment.

Mheegan as far as I've read, yes. They are supposedly still looking into it. Havent checked POL in the last hour though.

The only reason I gave in and started messing with it was because I figured SE is going to take forever and I was so bored I got curious with my ps2.

I feel you on losing all the markers/macros. Im dreading the thought of when I decide to fully log in on my ps3.

LMFAO yea it did that to me earlier but then when I started over it actually dropped the time remaining from what it was to like 2-3 hours. I almost felt like Bender on Futurama and wanted to ***bricks till I looked at the time remaining.

FYI: do not install just ffxi and do update before you install the expansions. Doing the update fills your temp file space preventing you from loading the TOAU expansion disk. I had to restart the process from scratch. Still waiting to see if this works; however I do know installing ffxi only and performing update will not allow you to install the wotg expansion.

Ok so, good news here to all you PS2 users who have a ps2 unable to read discs anymore. I've taken mine apart and located the problem. Basically, the laser eye that reads the discs is on a track, and it slides back and forth via a threaded pin to the right side of it, and the laser eye has a small white plastic piece that lays on top of threaded pin, and has 2 small plastic pieces underneath it that fit in the threads on the pin. Unfortunately after years of use, these small plastic pins have worn down considerably, and even remnants of them are stuck in the threads of the pin(cleaned out with a knife easily). What you need to do to fix this, is pop the 6 caps underneath your ps2, remove those 6 long screws, then flip over your ps2, lift off the top piece, which will still be attached to the main console with a small strip for power to the LED buttons(there will be a void sticker you have to remove in order to do this, i highly doubt your machine is still under warranty :P). Once you remove the top, and lay it next to the ps2, there are 4 tiny screws holding the cover to the CD compartment, you need a small eyeglass screwdriver, or i used a sharp knife, to remove these. Once that's off, and your ps2 is all opened up, turn it on, and open the cd tray with the button on the detached top piece, then turn the ps2 back off, you will then see the laser eye, and the plastic piece on the threaded pin/screw thing. I basically lightly squeezed these together, and cleaned out the bits of plastic stuck in the screw. Now just test if it worked by placing a cd in the tray, putting the cd compartment cover in place, and just holding it down with ur hand, turn the ps2 on and close the cd tray. If it reads, success! if not, open it back up, and re-attempt to get that plastic piece to connect better with the screw. Good luck! i'm currently reinstalling the game, and my console is reading the disk again just fine.

I was running around last night and it occurred to me that this current situation for all you PS2 users brought one very large truth to light: There are still lots and lots of PS2 players.

The server population was down way more than I expected (even during JP prime time) and the only contributing factor I can imagine is that its because many of the missing players must be PS2 users suffering with the install problem.

I did this also with ToAU last. >.< After 21 hours of yesterdays update I was ok with not being able to go to ToAU, until I tried to log in and was looking at another 20+ hours of system clogging files. Restarted, got all expansions installed and passed the "check" point with no error. The time is growing but at least it says 10 hours and not "unknown". Relieved that I will hopefully be in Abyssea sooner than later I can't help but worry over what will be happening with future updates. :/ I play on an 80gb Ps3 and it only lets me allocate 12gb for FFXI, is there any way around that? I'd happily give it 40 or more, it's the entire reason we bought a Ps3.
