@ Funk and Astrida

It looked pretty, but had no substance. A crippled human controlling a giant blue cat alien avatar falling in love with a legit alien. Please. Not to mention the war caused by dbag humans being dbags.

I'll admit it wasn't that terrible, but it certainly didn't deserve all the hype it got.

It was nice if you saw it in theaters in 3D, one of the nicest movie experiences I've had in a while :x

Not like there's anything with a nice story lately anywho :/ It's all about the kabooms and HD! It's really the only thing that they can advance on at this point.

I liked it, like i said earlier, i didnt compare it to other movies, and i still dont. People are blowing off the movie just because herpderp its like pocahontas, who gives a ***, its not pocahontas. But meh, to each their own i guess.

Surprised by all the Will Farrel and Michael Cera hate.

The thing I like about Cera even if his characters are similar not many actors could fill that role especially at his age. There is a uniqueness to him that others would just fail trying to pull off, I find he does the most simple things as being humorous. I can understand people getting tired of similar roles I suppose. I at first thought Cera would be better for Zombieland over Jesse Eisenberg but after the first scene took back my initial thoughts. Jesse Eisenberg to me is somewhat similar to Cera but with a touch of bad assness. I think Shia LaBeouf is the next closest to pulling it off with this optimistic yet pathetic outlook on life who is fully content in knowing their place in society. (Refer to scene in Transformers1 where he told Megan Fox it was ok to hide while getting a ride home from him)

Problem with Avatar I see was like the haters are saying was all the hype, that can completely impact a movie perception. What you go into a movie with as expectations will almost always affect what you take from it. Luckily I saw it the second week it came out and hardly knew anything about it had zero expectations and was completely impressed. I did see similarities obviously to other story lines when watching but like others have said pretty much every single story plot is being recycled by now.

my contribution to the thread:

I also think people love to hate anything that is main stream or is #1 or happens to be on top at the time, easy to anti-bandwagon bandwagon.

EDIT: I've known to do it subconsciously and then later on in life correcting preconceived notions I had come up with. Specifically TV shows that were popular at the time I figured would be stupid until later watching it when it's syndicated.

Aside from the visuals, what did you like about the movie? Did you honestly think the story was well done?

It was a sci-fi story of humans trying to interract with aliens to profit for themselves, aliens don't cooperate, military is HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE, blows ***up, they get mad, kill some military stuff and they go away. The story wasn't mind blowing, but like I said earlier, you can't really make anything original at this point. And I don't see how you can say "aside from the visuals," It's a movie, in which you watch things on the screen. Visuals are part of it

It's not a drama, I wouldn't expect it to be an amazing storyline.

I kind of take a movie for what it is, if it's a drama (my favorite genre) I expect to be entertained with an awesome storyline that fills me with emotions. No this movie didn't do that.

I thought it was a simple story line with a love story with awesome battles and entertaining visuals, it brought me in to the movie. When the big battle was going to begin it gave me that feeling (not saying it was the same level) of Braveheart when you are getting anxious with excitement. I didn't feel that the movie lagged or was dragged on, didn't find any holes in the storyline or down time I was entertained throughout the movie there was always something stimulating.

As for the bad guy general I'm pretty sure the people who feel conned about how corny he was don't understand that is exactly what he was supposed to be going for. A stupid corny villain type who is GI Joe gone bad on steroids. I thought Ribisi played out his part according to plan as well.

I have seen the movie shorts where they break down every single scene and try to over simplify the movie in saying it was the same basics as Titanic or how they used the disney eyes etc yes they all have valid points but wtf is thinking all this ***when watching a movie? I'm there to be entertained, yes if there is a plot to figure out my mind is often stimulated but this wasn't that movie.

also i don't think it's fair to say "aside from the visuals" this movie was leaps and bounds and bounds waaaaay ahead of the curve compared to other visually stimulating movies.

No I'm not talking about the 3D.

To think back among all the visually stimulating or innovative movies in my life time and the leaps they had made and how I was so impressed with them at the time. This movie made leaps far beyond any movie in my life time that I have ever seen. The gap was massive between this movie and let's say Transformers2 a similarly timed released movie which hy itself would have been amazing graphics.

Think back to other movies that impressed you at the time visually. I guess Terminator is an example. At the time of T2 people went insane with the liquid T2 and all that ***. I dunno there are other movies maybe LOTR? I can't think of many right now lol but others that were known at the time for having great graphics.. What I'm trying to say is they took a bunny hop from the other movies at the same time and we were all in awe. Avatar took a huge giant leap, nothing comes close to comparing to it visually. I also don't think it will for a little while. I think what this movie will do though is help the entire industry make that jump more quickly. They created an entire world in which our minds could not easily discard as fake or fake looking.

Now back to the 3D... I've always HATED 3D movies I told my wife and friends I would rather watch the non-3D version but they convinced me to watch it. This was the first movie to do 3D right.. and although now it's super gimickey and everyone is doing 3D I think they are doing better 3D now.. Bringing the audience into the movie rather than the old cheap throw a an arrow out at you to *** with you type crap.

Aliens: Great visuals, awesome settings, but the story? Ppl find an Alien, Alien kills people. That's it. Does it matter? No.

Terminator: Great visuals and action, but the story? You can explain it in one sentence. Does it matter? No, cause it's an action flick!

Avatar: Great Visuals, Dragons, well done effects. The story? nvm. Good movie, great details...and mech suits!

Enter countless action movies here.

Not every movie needs a great story! Sometimes, it's all about visuals, explosions, action, violence and so on. When I watch a Zombie movie, I wanna see ppl killing zombies. I don't care about the story in that case. Sometimes, rather senseless movies are fun. B-Movies, Trash, Splatter: What would the world be without it?

There's more than story-based masterpieces like Eraserhead, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Fight Club, Citizen Kane, Modern Times, Blade Runner, Rear Window, Forest Gump and countless more.

Lol, nobody has ever told me I'm trippin' before, that's awesome! :D

Anyway, I think the reason I dislike it so much is that people built it up so damn high that when I finally watched it, it couldn't possibly live up to what was said about it. "Oh, you GOTTA watch it, it'll change your whole view of the world!"

No. No, it didn't.
