when i first started to play the game i was like... wtf. too laggy, so many bugs... well, everything was already mentioned here.
seems SE listened to all the complaints according to the announced november update.
i was about to quit after the free trial, but as they gave ppl who signed up before october 25 another free 30 days, i'll give it another try and check out the update - as its free anyway.

I find it interesting so many people are flat out saying,”Fix THIS or I quit”. I look at this game and the many others that have come over the past 5 years and I noticed something. Most games had major “design” flaws. Flaws that depended on the people of the server to not exploit or take advantage of the system and ruin the game for the other side (WAR, Aion, AoC etc.. etc..).
FFXIV is a very good game. Did they rush it? YES! Is there a lot of stuff that needs to be fixed/changed/adjusted? YES! All of these issues we getting looked at and adjusted/fixed. The game is not even a month old and they have a very good core game going for them.
Summary: the game will only get better.

Nothing on the video games department seems to really innovate, just like nothing will innovate FPS at this moment, same seems to go for RPG's, probably why JRPG's aren't strong this generation and most people have been inclined for WRPG, and few different mechanics is all that seems to change but it's all the same, probably why now everything is apparently a rip off of any other game. Very little games that I can count with my fingers have brought anything new to the table.

For JRPGs I think characters that aren't so stereotypical would help a lot.

Enjoy Probably the worst review yet. I think it's a little comical.. Common, SE made good here, they said "Ok.. your right, we suck.. it was rushed an your not going to pay to play a beta." Good for them.
If it was just more fun or if there was some sort of sweet goal or mindlessly entertaining part of it, I don't think people would mind the bugs ad flukes so much..

Ouch, but sadly most of that is true. I am sure a lot of those complaints will be gone by PS3 release.
Sucks we have to pay for beta/design.

All I can personally hope for now is that SE magically fixes most of the issues in the game, which at this point means that there is going to be a complete overhaul of the current coding. This means that the past several months, possibly years, of meetings, decisions, and agreed upon direction the game was to take will be thrown out the window. The only feasible way that the game will work as well as it should be is to take all the mechanics of FFXI, implement it with updated graphics, and improve upon the flaws of FFXI...and to my knowledge the Auction House from FFXI had some flaws like all mass-available data information would, but it made selling items easier. Now, I understand that market wards will solve some of the issues, but seriously why the hell would you not make it possible to at least have the game indicate all the people who have a particular item or search for the people who have it. They are doing this now, but what the hell were they thinking not already having it available. I am starting to regret even purchasing the game and even though it is still free, I barely want to play it. It boggles the mind how this game was introduced years ago at its early stages and how it has mutated into the worst, clunkiest, run-down, unintuitive piece of ***on the market...I saw how bad a rating the Sniper game got for the PC and this achieved a worse rating than that, which is near impossible.
Is it just me or does SE promise a ***-ton of stuff and then just leave the "ton" part out leaving you with ***...People who play MMOs these days don't have time to do monotonous activities like the crafting system thrives on...thankfully, they are adding a feature that saves previous recipes and adds the items automatically. Once again though, What...the...***...were...you...thinking...SE!!! It would seem to me that the graphical department is friggin' awesome and the person directing the actual content was smoking something when he or she decided that the game should be completely different than FFXI, end up unloading general crap into the game that has unbearable usability, and not even take into consideration that people want to make the most out of their game experience, which doesn't include having to click on 7 different items to create some other item and having to repeat this every damn time you want to make that item all hindered by several, like 6 click-through, menus.
I was one of those people that didn't care how bad the game was because I enjoyed the game, but I have gotten to the point where I want the game to work for me since I am paying for it, instead of me working for it...Right now it is like going to work and having to pay them for the work you are doing for them...it makes no sense.
tl;dr version
Up yours SE for continuing to believe that simple promises of a friggin awesome game will bring in revenue. All that data collection from Alpha through Beta 3, and you still couldn't figure out that the menus were laggy, crafting was monotonous, item acquisition via market wards on a server filled with thousands of people could be done through a bazaar or zombie bazaar was time-consuming if not complete dumb-***.
I currently give the potential for this game 2 thumbs up, but I give SE's implementation of game design two flips of the bird.
.,!,(-.-),!,. Eat me SE.

I wouldn't be surprised if they knew about the flaws in the game, but only decided to start doing anything about them once the bad review scores and complaints started popping up all over the web. No point putting in the effort to do things properly unless its to save your own hide, I guess. I know games are a business, but SE could at least try to give the impression that they care about their customers beyond their subscription payments.
I don't like sounding cynical about all of this, but the way that they've handled the release of XIV is making it difficult for me to have faith in SE's good natured side.

Along with the 30 out of 100 from PCGamer already posted, here's another awful one.
1UP gives a D+, (equivalent to a Metacritic score of 33 out of 100.)
Keep in mind, I don't expect my opinion to weigh more than anyone else's.
But after a devastating sequence of bugs and a particularly miserable night desperately trying to enjoy this stunningly awful, absolute train wreck of a game, I quit. I have better things to do with my (limited) free time after work than spend it playing something that makes me this frustrated, angry, and depressed.
I'll poke at it again when the extended trial expires and see if it's any better, but I'm done for now.

I think the 1-Up review is very fair. I've played it since July on alpha, and I'm still playing it.
A lot of XIV is very similar to XI in the early days during JP release and currently. There is next to no in game help. BOTH interfaces suck ***. XI has a idiotic confusing and stupid interface. XIV's layout is better because it's customizable but it's laggy. (tho mouse play is possible unlike FFXI) I've watched about a dozen people pick up XI to attempt to play it to be utterly lost confused and frustrated beyond belief as they are laughed at all the way to level 10, then expected to know what to do in a party. THAT is what they really needed to fix in XIV. They need a tutorial, they need to teach people how to play the game. I hear in XI also that Eldieme Necropolis was once endgame, can you imagine? I see the very same limited content here in this game.. the basic areas are there but not much else. FFXI was probably very very close to FFXIV's sad shape on release and up on till RotZ. I believe if they could fix FFXI from the terrible game it was on release into the gem it became.. they can fix FFXIV too. But who knows.. time will tell.
When people complain about the fatigue system like GameSpot or PCGamer I just laugh though.. I've played my *** off on this game and never even noticed it. They didn't even play it long enough to figure out the map let alone hit fatigue but there they are bitching about it.
Nice article 1-Up.

I feel the need to say this since everyone complains that there is no tutorial in-game: READ THE *** MANUAL. I don't see why there HAS to be a tutorial in-game. It's your own fault for not reading it and learning the controls. For XI I had no idea how to work the controls when it first came out so I read the manual and set it up how I liked it and after that I never had any problems at all.

On release it had nothing some 8 years after they did add a starter quest to XI eventually to help people learn.. and this too. http://www.playonline.com/ff11newplayer/index.html?lang=en-gb
It helps a lot... belated as it was. Not everyone learns the same way, maybe some explore and figure it out like I do, maybe you read about it, maybe someone else needs a tutorial or instruction.

I usually just try different controls but I'm used to WASD controls, not numpad like in FF but instead trying to play with that (which is horrible to me) I looked in the manual which of course had the answer I wanted. I still think that complaining about there not being a tutorial when they clearly don't read the manual is stupid.

I dont ever read the damn manual. it's pointless, you can figure out the controls that way, yes, but an interactive tutorial is far better for a game. I just prefer to learn as i go, figure out the things myself.
Now, i was used to the Numpad controls from XI, as i prefer it over the HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE WASD control, so my fingers instantly went there. Even in WoW when i played i changed my controls to it >_>;

GamesRadar delivers another 4 out of 10, and Play.tm gives it a 49%, dropping its Metacritic score to 50/100.
"The immaculate golden middle-finger statuette for excellence in the field of '*** you.'"
"It seems functional enough at first glance, but as you wade ever deeper, you discover a swampy muck of bugs, quirks, and design decisions that stroll right up to common sense, retch loudly, and then spit in its face."
"All of that, though, could – at least, in theory – be tightened and tweaked into something resembling working order with a few well-applied patches. Problem is, you can’t very well stick a Band Aid over a bullet through the heart, so it’s a shame that many of Final Fantasy XIV’s flaws are much more than skin deep."

I was one of the many suckered into what I thought would be an awesome Collector's Edition. I'm actually more envious of what others got... Garlond Goggles and from WalMart - a pretty map. Collector's Edition was an epic fail and waste of money.
I think I played this game all of 5 days, if that. I can't find a good reason to even bother logging in. It bores me, no one talks, there's no story beyond the first little introductory quests (well maybe there is, but it doesn't come fast enough to keep me playing.) It just reeks of boredom and ***.
Also, the security token was a ripoff for us FFXI players... don't need one if you already got one.
I had so much faith in SE after they finally started listening to people and fixed XI, but now... no more faith. Gonna cancel (no SE I will not stay for your apologetic extra 30 days, that's how much this game blows) and maybe come back in 6 months to a year when they decide to pull their heads out of their ***.
And, this is stupidity on my part, I feel even more misled because I bought new parts to build a new franken-puter to run the stupid game. I just keep telling myself that it was gonna need upgrading at some point...

I still don't think the game has been out long enough for these places to effectively review it. But that's already been said I think...
I am going to give the game some time and a chance before I stop...yeah it can use lot of improvements but I really think SE will fix it and turn it into a good game. Maybe I am too optimistic but meh.

what is final fantasy's ixv official site? i mean a site playonline equivalent to final fantasy ix where they post maintenance/server info ectect?? i tried to google some of this stuff & wasnt able to find it... but, im surprised SE didnt respond to the comments or explain to there costumers on future fix ups/maintenance (if they havent already) the game has been out an substantial amount for a replay by them to explain whats in the works for the future of this game.
edit: and with this many bugs to begin with wth were beta testers doing... either 1) SE are really some lazy *** that just dont give a *** or 2) they werent getting enough beta bug reports from its testers or come to think of it >.>; maybe they knew there were all these bugs but couldnt do anything about it because of insignificant funds on this particular project & decided to dup the people and release anyway to get a positive revenue to spend on fixing the bugs idk <.<

AKA Arcanist, Musketeer. Heared there is gonna be Fencer, Conqueror as well. PS3 lacks internal memory to run FFXIV good. Even the X360 original lacks it but the new 1 maybe be able to stable it with a few adjustments.
Post any links to press reviews, etc here.
So far it's getting 1.5 out of 5 stars on JP Amazon.com, after a few hundred reviews, and is already 25% off for both versions.
