If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.

This bill was Introduced Sep. 20, 2010 and is well on it's way to the Committee.

Some I could see as being helpful but that's a lot of power to give to the private sector, and the Executive/legislative Branch.

Thanks for the link.
I haven't read the whole thing properly yet, but this bit jumped out at me immediately as being very harsh:

`(B) DETERMINATION BY THE COURT- For purposes of determining whether an Internet site conducts business directed to residents of the United States under subparagraph (A)(ii)(I), a court shall consider, among other indicia whether--

`(i) the Internet site is actually providing goods or services to subscribers located in the United States;

`(ii) the Internet site states that it is not intended, and has measures to prevent, infringing material from being accessed in or delivered to the United States;

`(iii) the Internet site offers services accessible in the United States; and

`(iv) any prices for goods and services are indicated in the currency of the United States.

A lot of websites I know of tend to indicate prices in the native currency and in US dollars, meaning a huge amount of websites worldwide will be subject to this law even if they are not hosted in the USA.

This act could smack a blow to all 3rd party applications that other large Co. feel as a threat to there global marketing advantages.

Meaning if Microsoft(as an example) has any Copy rights on it they could totally remove all 3rd party applications that fall into its territory from the internet. All together even ones over seas that are put in any form of being US assessable would be effected.

Wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it.. This is about as likely to happen, as the year 2000 computer meltdown end of the world ***fest was..

Tho the likeliness is small I find it insulting that our law makers would even think something as stupid as this up.

They have been fighting for Copy right enforcements and every step they take gets worse.

If they wanna combat piracy, then they should make it mandatory that the customer can seek a refund for a film/game/w/e that is completely lame..

As it stands, there are very few games I will outright buy without testing the merchandise first.. And from my last few downloads, I'm glad I'm a goddamned pirate, because I would be pissed if I payed for them..

I stopped putting faith into companies pushing out decent games when I bought Far Cry 2.. That is and will always be the last game I bought blindly.

yeah, I read some of it on PCmag.com, and it *** sucks.

/starts deleting pirated movies

I mean seriously, they'll even come after individual users if the pirating persists.

/deletes pirated music

If this bill goes through, the internet will break.

/hides pirated stash of porn
