It's not much different. People are generally more communicative and are better for setting up teams. People also play champs they know well, so often they're more skilled.
You also have the opportunity to ban champions. Tanks and invisible characters usually get the boot.

I would do ranked if it was with people I know. Only games I've played were with this one batshit, crazy female I met on there. Usually lead to a /facepalm!

Not sure, but I'm loving ARAM's. Although it sucks so much to get a champ like Shen.
I haven't played much, but usually teams with healers and the best harass do the best.
