On this nice sunny day of summer, I walked outside to smell in the fresh air. Ah, the birds chirping and the trees and flowers in bloom - releasing enough pollen to keep me from breathing right for a week.

So next time someone tells you that the eyeball is a perfect creation that could only have been designed by a greater power, I submit as example to the contrary my poor watery eyes. For ***'s sake ....

Too bad I can't walk out and smell the fresh air... Someone came and ground a stump right outside our back door (used to be a huge tree) and for some reason, even after 2 days it smells like horse ***.. Dunno if you've ever smelled a horse pasture, it's not a good smell.

Chances are if you trace your ethnic lineage back to its indigenous origins that your specific physiology was never acclimated to the climate and geography that you currently live in, thus your allergies.

Oh I wouldn't doubt it. And hell, I now live 3000 miles from where I grew up. I do love the sunshine ... just hate the pollen that comes with it. Achoo!

Also because of our 1st world pampering, we're not exposed to a lot of the same elements we were hundreds and thousands of years ago. The vast majority of people in 3rd world countries don't have the allergies we spend millions each month to suppress, plus they don't suffer from our common irritable bowel diseases like Crohn's or IBS (side note: a new treatment for Crohn's is to infect the patient with a hookworm to give the body's immune system something to fight instead of itself.)

I need to shake this Wikipedia addiction.

I don't have allergies, but the sun is trying to kill me. I was a bridesmaid for my best friend's wedding a few days ago, and I was out in the sun for maybe 5 minutes for rehearsal. 5 minutes! And my shoulders, nose, chest, and ears got scorched. It's not like I'm in California, either, I live in the Rocky Mountains. ~.~

Of course, one must take into consideration that I am very pale, Irish heritage, naturally blond, and have already been told by more than one doctor to stay out of the sun because I'm a high burn risk. But still. 5 flippin' minutes. /sulk

I love being out in the sun

I'm allergic to dust mites though, which kinda sucks, but I just have to take allergy meds once in a while

There's also the thing about the blind spot. The optic nerve runs from the brain to the back of each eye, and the spot where it connects to the retina creates a tiny patch on the surface where light can't be detected, creating a miniscule blind spot in our field of vision.

You're supposed to be able to test it by holding up a pencil at arms length in front of you, then slowly moving it to the right (if you're holding it in your right hand) while looking straight forwards. Eventually the pencil enters the blind spot and you won't pick it up in your peripheral vision. Therefore, the eye isn't 100% perfect, so the human body isn't 100% perfect. This suggests we're either a product of evolution, or that who/whatever 'designed' us intentionally made our eyes flawed.

There was a TV show on a long time ago about an atheist who went around arguing with people from different religions, and I've always remembered the part where he brought this up as a counter to the intelligent design story.

EDIT: I also have itchy eyes from pollen. Bad start to the summer this year. =(

This thread is way over my head. All I can add is:

http://www.visine.com/product-visine-ac.jsp

However, just know the normal dose never works for anyone I know. Have to double or triple it in each eye, works wonders.

Incidentally, octopus' eyes do not have the retinal nerve and blood vessels incorrectly laid down over the rods and cones, so they do not have the blind spot problem and are thus apparently more intelligently designed than us.

You're like this walking sponge of knowledge.. Either that or you just love to google off the wall facts that happen to coincide with the post at hand.

Just as an addendum to Jaerik's random trivia of the day, the theoretical reason behind this is explained through convergent evolution--vertebrates and cephalopods developed their version of the eye in different monophyletic groups. In other words, they did not share a common ancestor with some form of a photoreceptor and develop from there, but rather developed them completely independently of each other.

(Had to dig around Wikipedia for the correct terminology... otherwise Jaerik's little tidbit reminded me of this random fact from my general bio class :P)

so you are not perfect. .. are you saying that because of that there is no god?... 1/2 of you would not take any thing as proof of any thing for proof with out imperial proof, you can not get it.. so if you find out how to make a test for that then you can *** all you want about how hokey believing in God. that been said id be happy to argue with any one over any thing you want... but if you are going to start saying things as fact.. that you can not back up.. I'm gona shoot holes in your statements, and if I am not clear about something be sure you let me know.
