It was a bad idea, tbf...

FFXI would never fit well in a small cellphone window.

Plus, none can afford 5 years waiting.

It would've worked just fine, junkies would've simped for it regardless. My queen SE can do no wrong!

It's curious the real reason it got shelved. Sure as hell wasn't QC or pride or any of that. If it were they wouldn't have gone with bottom of the barrel Nexon.

It would be fine if:
  • It wasn't a MMO/done in a MMO style

  • It was done in a traditional FF style

  • It was just a port of the story into a different combat system

  • It wasn't a pay2win skinner box

There is no reason to not be capable of having a full final fantasy in your pocket.
I have 6 in my phone, and I do believe people have "ported" 7 out too. A real corporation should have no issue with an actual "port" of relative visual quality (e.g. more than 32bits).

But given 16.... doesn't look like traditional final fantasies will be back.

I told myself sweet little lies of what this would be. And believed it.

It was doomed to fail the moment they teamed up with Nexon.

Yeah as soon as I saw the association with Nexon I presumed it would never be made. Nexon isn't exactly known for their 'speedy good quality games'.

Funny enough around the same time as XI Mobile was announced, Maplestory Mobile was announced. So we can see where their priorities were.

Probably an early sign that they don't see much life left in the ffxi name itself, so this product wouldn't appeal to any new audience. "promising projects" was the word they used that they want to focus on. FFXI isn't promising

Kinda glad that one died after seeing who was behind it and what type of game is was turning into.

On the side note, there was already a Final Fantasy XI inspired Mobile game, it was called "Final Fantasy: Grandmasters", it never came global, and the JP Version is no longer running. It doesn't hold a candle to FFXI, but honestly, I played it and even though I couldn't read Japanese, it was still... quite fun.. for a mobile game anyway.

It used the FFXI Music and models, weapon and armor too, just chibi-stylized. Also was MMO-Lite, with each area being able to see other players, join their fights, and etc. The map had enemies you could fight, and when you ran into them, it'd open up like an ATB battle against a group of enemies for that region, and other players could join that fight mid-battle and also earn exp.

They had BCNMs too... and Holliday events in San D'oria!

I remember that, well good riddance. I can't stand any phone games anymore, just not fun at all to me with the damn lottery crap, I'd rather pay for a full game than gamble garbage. I wonder what that big announcement in 2022 is if they axed the mobile game.

agreed. Only thing I run on my phone game wise is tetris, solitaire, and a SNES emulator.

The Mobile Gaming Market needs to crash and burn and never come back again.

99.9% of the "games" on Google Play are literally pay2win casinos.

Even the classics like OG Angry Birds and Cut the Rope are filled with microtransactions and face-raping ads these days.

The real gem of it all was this line.
"After Director Sim Gi Hoon got involved, it is known that the gameplay has shifted in the direction of combining the RPG and TCG genre."

Good riddance, they were trying to recreate FFXI and most loyal fans wouldn't buy it. It was made for those who have long since gone from the game and want that "nostalgia", but honestly, you can't have that nostalgia trip because it can't be duplicated.

There is no way you can remake the way FFXI was in its early days, it was a brand new online experience and many people's first (and only) MMO. Putting a new coat of paint on it but restricting you to certain zones, while playing more like a solo game is against everything FFXI stands for. What they should be doing, is focusing on keeping FFXI alive by making new content (better updates) and actually advertise it.

There's room for retro games in 2020, and a new audience to tap in to. I got my nephew in to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive because I bought him a mini console with built in games and he LOVES it. He still has his crappy mobile games (Roblox), but nothing beats a two player on Streets of Rage, Road Rash, Toejam and Earl or Sonic 2.

FFXI should act like an entry level MMO for video gamers who want their first taste of what it's like to interact with FF fans in a gaming environment, but it doesn't, and shouldn't require a brand new mobile version of it. They should show they are proud of it by investing in it, and not try to bleed people away from it with FFXIV and a hollow mobile trip.

See, I don't even mind if they decide to *** out the IP and make a bunch of XI-lore inspired games. Vana'diel is awesome, and if they mined it for everything from a CCG to Waifu Beach Volleyball with Lilisette and Aphmau, I wouldn't give a ***.

Just don't pretend it's actually Final Fantasy XI.

Good, mobile gaming needs to die and have a stake impaled in its heart to ensure it never rises again.

Gacha games are going to cause the second gaming crash unless they get ousted.

What this means for Final Fantasy XI can really go one of two ways. Either Square-Enix thought there was no potential in the mobile version after all, or they've got something planned for the 20th anniversary which might take everyone by surprise.

Time will tell, but I'm glad this got cancelled.

What's really bizarre to me about this is that they already made a mobile FF11 port for Japanese smartphones several years ago. It was called Final Fantasy Grandmasters. It was... a different kind of game, but it used the job system, basic story elements and Vana'diel lore, subjobs&job abilities, and endgame raids (each of the Avatar fights, Nyzul Isle, etc.). It even used the Trust system--- instead of forming parties with real players you could make a party of NPCs to solo certain content.

The game wasn't even that bad by mobage standards... it used cute chibi 3D models for the characters, had a fairly robust party finder system, a shout system, and plenty of ways to play with other people (if you joined an existing battle, you could help bring the mob down for a portion of the drop rewards). Player collaboration was super important, since each job had to time their debuff+buff uses with each other in order to clear high-end content. It was a little tricky at first since my Japanese isn't that good, but eventually I was able to see the regular patterns and ability cycles.

The progression system relied on gear iLvls and upgrading abilities to make them more potent or have more uses. It was... fine, it at least made sense. The gacha system was tbh kinda annoying, since you had two gachas: one for equipment, and one for job-specific abilities. On top of that, there were sometimes Trust Fests which used the same gacha system as the ability one. That's really my one complaint, as far as I remember. I don't hate gacha systems at all, I've seen some really well-implemented ones (Dissidia Opera Omnia is a good example in the West). Grandmaster's gacha system kinda sucked. But overall, this was a pretty good game, and the closest I've seen to true MMORPG-style interaction in a mobage.

So seeing all the drama and dumb ***revolving around this so-called "FF11 mobile port" kind of confuses me.

This doesn't bode well for the "2022 surprise", but I'm starting to fear it will be the end. I know people have been playing that tune for years now, but I just don't know what they can do with XI now. I don't get good vibes from their future plans at this point. Then again, they are making FFXI-themed events at random coffee shops in Japan and the game still prints money for them due to skeleton staff. Tough to say.

I /really/ had hope that the mobile game was somehow a misdirection of development towards making XI better somehow, but that hope is dashed now. Sometimes game/hardware companies will have code-names and misdirection for projects they intend to keep under wraps and I had really wanted to place my eggs in that basket after seeing some renders of FFXI Mobile.

Wish SE could buy the already done assets and transform that game into a single player version of FFXI that can remain as faint memory of what FFXI used to be even 10 years from now.

FFXI is a "numbered" FF after all. What is SE gonna tell their fans in 2035 when the FFXI servers will likely be closed and FFXI unplayable?
Will SE tell his fans "you can't play the eleventh title of the FF series, sorry"?

Providing an offline-only version, while only an imitation of what FFXI really used to be, would be better than nothing.
