Good morning folks,

I was wondering if there was a way to macro the 'alt + tab' command to an xbox remote. Or perhaps one key instead of two.

My hand is killing me from all the Alt Tabbing.
Ya know, from looking up youtube video guides while playing XI. Yes.

No lie my hand hurts. Help.... :(

Thank you,
Senaki.

If you want to alt tab to switch between multiboxes you can use FFXI Switchmon (you should be able to find it somewhere, it's a suuuuuuper old program) and configure one butten to swap between instances.

If it's for other stuff I personally never figuered out how to alttab from a controller, but I'm a scrub.

I've used JoyToKey, and have Alt Tab mapped to R1. It's a bit fringy if you have more than just 2 windows open though, since it often tabs to a third window and throws everything off, but I've used the multiple desktop feature on Windows 10 to put things I'm not actively using (music/excel etc.) into another virtual desktop so it doesn't tab to them. so if you're using more than 2 windows, you'll probably have to map Alt and Tab separately

Use AutoHotKey to set up a key to be Alt+Tab combination. Maybe the key under the Esc key.

I might do that myself now actually.

Is that something already on a windows computer?

I see myself using this in other games as well. Having a macro on a controller for things like Steam would make my life way easier when trying to exit, but not close, certain games that use a controller.

My concern with all these third party options is like, how do I know they won't also download malicious software? I'm not a tech savvy guy. So how do I know if they include key logging or something?

Autohotkey is used by millions of people for all kinds of different things. It's not ffxi specific. Anyway, I couldn't work out what that key is called in autohotkey so I couldn't set it up for myself and no other key seemed suitable.

I see, thank you for the information.

Annoying thing about this is that in windows 8 and newer, you need the 'uiaccess=true' flag in manifest to trigger alt-tab with simulated input. If you set the flag, the application needs to be in a system folder and the developer needs a certified code signing certificate, which runs a few hundred dollars a year.

So, while it would take only a couple minutes to throw together something that changes say, left trigger to alt and right trigger to tab, without throwing that money at the certificate it can't be used. I wrote an app for that back when windows 7 was the go-to, but it's useless now. Thanks M$.

Uhhhh.....

I have Windows 8. What do I do? I can't afford to do anything like that.

Nothing, just a rant about why a tool that should be incredibly simple to obtain is not so.

If I wanted to macro it to my gamepad controller, but not keyboard, is the process different / more available?

Nope, the problem is that no software can trigger alt-tab unless the person that wrote that software has a signing certificate. So, despite the software being relatively easy to write, that limits it to people who already have a certificate because nobody is going to pay hundreds just to share their application for free.

Ffxiswitchmon works differently by changing the active application directly, but it will only work with FFXI for that reason. It also can potentially cause crashes for some reason.

I used autohotkey back when I triple boxed. That script should still work, just install AHK.

Switchmon works well it takes some other program to get it to work with windows 10, once you tic one box it works. I don't recall the name I think it might be on my laptop still though.

I don't have start or select setup in ffxi on my gamepad... I have joy2key with alt and tab assigned to them. Works well.

This is referring to the name of each instance of windower as taken from the char's name?

Also what Thorny says seems to be true. I could not make AHK tab between windows by using AltTab or {Alt}+{Tab} or any other variation which should have worked fine.

Yep. I haven't tried it in a while but I used it to great effect for a long time.

This seems to be the case, in that i've tried multiple options online and none work with FFXI.

How do I get switchmon? Does it work?

From OP, it sounded like you wanted to switch from FFXI to Chrome and back, for example. FFXISwitchMon isn't designed to do that - it only rotates through your FFXI windows (used for multiboxing).

If switching FFXI windows is your goal, Switchmon can still work (I can't vouch for a safe place to download it), but I'd suggest the AutoHotKey solution linked by Rooks. I used Switchmon for years on Win7, and briefly on Win10 (some unresolved issues), and definitely prefer AHK.

Odin.Senaki, you should see about being looked at by a specialist. We're not as young and spry as we used to be 18 years ago when this game was released and if you are having issues (hand is hurting) from pressing two keys, it sounds like it could be a serious issue. Maybe, at least, get a brace?

White Mage doesn't have a spell that cures carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis. This isn't my normal witty quip, meme, or compli-sult. I actually care about the health of others.

This is better on theory than practice tbf.

I had xpadder on my computer, and i did map my back trigger for alt+tab.

But its bad use, because alt tab gonna switch between two windows, and depending what you have opened, then you will need to manually hold alt then switch to the correct window.

I think i got a better combination by mapping alt on one trigger and tab in the other, then i could navigate between my chars windows.

Currently, though, idk why but i went back to alt tabbing from keyboard, i dont think its that much an ergonomic problem, i just take my hands of my controller left side then quickly hit the buttons on my key board.

Thats to say, maybe you should review your chair, table, your place in general and do a better arrangement ergonomically speaking. There are a lot of theory how to arrange furniture for better comfort while playing. Also, maybe look for a doctor or work some exercises as those pains arent normall and should be investigated. Tendonitis, maybe.

Finally, the real answer is abusing sending commands between instances. Making macros like to enable autofollow, enable some interaction, enable some battle action without alt tabbing gonna improve your overall performance while playing, also it will make your life easier

So if, theoretically, someone wanted to multi box with it. Which is better to use?
