So, not sure where to really post this but here goes.

I am looking to buy a laptop to run FFXI smoothly. I figured I might need to use dgvoodoo either way which isn't a problem, just something I've never tried before.

Can anyone recommend a decent laptop to get me started?

I've been looking at this: HP 15 Laptop 15.6" , AMD Ryzen 3 2200U, AMD Radeon Vega 3, 1TB HDD, 4GB SDRAM, Jet Black, 15-db0066wm

http://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-15-Laptop-15-6-AMD-Ryzen-3-2200U-AMD-Radeon-Vega-3-1TB-HDD-4GB-SDRAM-Jet-Black-15-db0066wm/471500900

Any thoughts?

Quick search on Amazon brought me THIS

Automatically has 3 things I dont live without in my olden age: IPS screen, SSD, and Backlit keyboard.

And it's a slim model too.

As for the one you linked, I'd keep looking.

Awesome. Thanks for your time and post. I see it has an integrated graphics card, though. I've been told it would be wise to get one with a dedicated graphics card. Does it really matter with FFXI?

I shouldn't matter with FFXI, but I think dgvoodoo changes that? I didn't even look at the graphics card! oops.

Keep searching Amazon or Newegg, budget laptops can be REALLY good for things like FFXI these days.

edit: wanting a dedicated gfx card is really smart btw IN CASE you ever play anything else. ^^b

Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6" Full HD and WD Blue 3D NAND 250GB PC SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s M.2 2280 Solid State Drive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HX333WZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_OyiBDbQW8KGZP

This seems like what I need, perhaps? Just pop in the SSD and it's g2g, right? Lol not the most tech savvy but I'm learning.

Thanks again for your help. It's much appreciated!

You're right it SHOULDN'T matter but it often does, Intel HD drivers suck more often than not.

There's cheaper and better toilet paper.

Quite frankly when it comes to a laptop where you'd want even the Windows experience to not be total garbage:

SSD 256gb (at least for the OS)
8GB+ of RAM
15.6" or bigger (fullsize keyboard ftw, especially for XI)

Now you'd also want a dedicated GPU, and I'd recommend (if it's in your budget) to upgrade to 16gb of ram and a NVMe M.2 slot and drive for the ssd, not something that uses the SATA standard but if it's not then meh, especially if all you're doing is porn/facebook/email/XI.

Will definitely be using a full size keyboard just need the laptop to hook it into! Will only be using this for FFXI so just looking for something to run it smoothly without any hiccups. Thanks for the info, now to just find one!

I just bought an Asus FX504 and I absolutely love it. The only downside is that it was $900 CDN.

Just get a 15.6" laptop, save yourself the trouble. I wouldn't spend less than $500 unless you want a bad time.

Looks like that one can be decent if you got the SSD one and not the hybrid drive.

Only other thing I'd add would be that it should have windows 7 instead of 10 so you can avoid dgvoodoo.

I have a netbook running ffxi with dgvoodoo... I think a dedicated videocard would be a good idea.

I could run 2-3 boxes on the netbook just fine but the graphics would have to be tuned to the minimum even with only 1 instance of ffxi. It lags badly in Mhaura and almost unplayable in over crowded CP area in Asura.

On the bright side, everyone looks like level 1 nubs with the armor turn to static. Makes you look fabulous and you can ignore the blinking idiots playing melee.

Not feasible on a new laptop, or even really possible (not saying it's impossible, but win7 support ended entirely with 7th gen iseries and comparable amd garbage).

Quite frankly even on Windows 7 some chipsets you would still need dgvoodoo, so hey.

I run Windows 10 and no dgvoodoo.

You still "need" dgVoodoo2 on Windows 7 though the effects aren't as severe. dgVoodoo2 just translates the games graphics from DX8 to DX11 which makes it far more compatible with modern drivers and OS's. And by "modern OS" we mean anything past Windows XP.

Thanks everyone for all the info. The Asus FX504 looks awesome but I just can't afford that right this minute. More of the 5-600$ range. Just still got a lot of searching to do! There's one out there, I just haven't found it yet. Lol

This is the laptop I bought about a year ago. No performance lag while dual boxing at all. In my opinion AMD has been superb for ffxi since playing the game since 2005.

If you can't afford a decent device then get a cheap desktop, your options are much bigger and can be way more affordable.

I have a cheap desktop I play on, just want something I can sit beside me and play it on too if I need to do something else on the desktop, kid on it, traveling or whatever else. Maybe I just need to save up a little more XD

In my case, I have been using an MSI (link to specs here) with GeForce 970M on Windows 10 for nearly 5 years. I played FFXI briefly back in 2016, and the experience with running it with the integrated card was aweful. I ran dgvoodoo and it was substantially better (too bad dgvoodoo wasn't working well with FFXI back then, it was one important reason that I lost interest in the game).

Now my laptop is almost 5 years old, not sure if the more recent integrated cards do a better job, if that's even all there's to it as to why FFXI ran horribly on my laptop.

XI will run on most anything but I think you want something with a dedicated vid chip. Especially if you are going to run any games made in this decade.

I tend to shop refurbished, saves money.

run and run well are two very different things and due to it's well lack of proper support and age the latter is much more difficult to achieve.

Then like I said earlier there's some base stats that you want even just to run windows in a tolerable environment, which is a SSD and 8gb of memory at a minimum. A refurbed business laptop with a dedicated gpu would probably run the game well.

The AMD Ryzen 3s are pretty damn good for integrated GPUs, not as good as something with GDDR5 but will play this game and make it pretty. Intel iGPUs on the other hand are just bad at anything with 3D graphics.

You don't need an SSD. My Toshiba lasted me 6 years and I only had to replace it due to the video card, figured I'd just buy a new one since it was getting old anyway. My new Asus doesn't have an SSD and it runs like a dream. Sure, an SSD is better, but you shouldn't be telling people that you need it at a minimum.

YOU shouldn't be telling people they shouldn't have it as their OS drive especially in a laptop.

Never once said you shouldn't have it. Looks like I said you don't need it at a minimum. The OP was already worried about funds, why tell him something more expensive should be his minimum that he aims for?
