For a long time I have been messing around with the UT engine and more specifically replacing the horrible engine in FFXI with something more modern.
I think I'm finally able to release a working ( but still consider it a bit unstable) test version of a fully integrated Unreal engine in FFXI with vulcan support (nice multicore support) for GPU acceleration.
* Full 3D acceleration
* Support Multicore threading
* Vsync support ( default for FPS limitation due to animation
* Triple buffering
* Way faster FPS and way more stable FPS
* Defaults to 60FPS ( again due to animations)
* 64bit code ( can still cause some issues with signed integers om FFXI code, but i believe i fixed most of these)
* increase Z buffering ( removed overlapping texture flickering)
* Real MSAA and AF support
* pre/post caching of maps for faster loading on zone change ( memory foot print increase from ~512mb to 2-*3GB depending on zone)
* High Res texture support ( for the wonderful mods on this forum)
* Npatch support ( Fakes more polygons stuff to make it appear more round. like the tail of a Mithra without having to change the model. Still needs A LOT of tweaking)
* Displacement mapping ( again a polygon faking method. still uses the original bump-maps as hints, but does wonder on the wall of castle on Sandy and Bast, and the tiling in Rulude garden)
* Target stay on model change (Character will still blink but they remain targetable as an "invisible target")
No models or texture or any materials data has been replaced only the actual #D engine
To be worked on
* crash fixes (I'm still expecting some random ones)
* Windower/ashita support (sorry its not working. I might have to reach out to the ashita/windower developes for this)
* More/faster AA method (MSAA is kinda like the "fake" one in Windower but done on the GPU instead of the CPU
* New KB/mouse support for a more natural controls compared toFPS games ( FFXI code is SO shitty on this. or I'm just not getting it)
* mods support without replacing currents dats( AKA mods will use .dat2 .dat3 .dat4 etc and it override the original .dat on the fly)
* Saleable True-type font ( to reduce the horrible front artifacts from scaling in game)
I hope this will help keep th game alive for current players and might attract new players in combination with the mods ( more modern look).
