Because the people who run the site and say its needed are the same ones who allow you to have an account.

I don't believe there is anything stopping you from putting in a different birthday anyway.

Isn't that required by every website first off. And second i think it probably ha something to do with knowing if they are dealing with a minor or not with you. If that affects what of your info is shared and what is not IDK.
