I don't have much time to spend doing trials, so is there anything out there crafted or dropped by NMs that would suffice?

Right now I have a couple of augmented firmaments.

Thanks.

Depends what is all available to you. Sanus, Odin V2 sword, Ephemeron, and Apaisante/+1 are about as good as they get outside of trial ones.

Isador from Isgebind is decent, it has accuracy, magic accuracy, and fast cast bonus.

This, if you want something quick. I'm sure many fall to the ground from those spamming it.

You may want to invest some time in STR sword trials though, obviously.

Stick with the firmaments until you can do str magian sword imo. That way you won't waste time getting bad swords. Or you could buy Apaisantes and sell them back when you get something better.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: Almace and str path swords add too much of a bonus to blu for any other sword to be anywhere close but Sanus is the only one i would use out of the other options. If you dont have time for trials you wont have time for VW/PW or anything else for that matter since blu can burn through trials very quickly.

This is very helpful guys thanks for the suggestions. I'll def go after Isador. I don't do a lot of VW, but I guess I have to start jumping of those runs when I see them.

Trials are really a pain for me... the little time I have to play i don't want to spend killing random stuff for hours and checking the weather forecast. Isador and Apaisantes sound like the most obtainable options. I am not looking to be an elite player with top gear. I just want have decent stuff that allows me to do decent damage or have decent def stats.

CW burn gear and atmas can get 2-3 trials done per firesdays i think i got my str sword done in a day. Very easy to do unless you are a pink mage and missing a ton of spells.

To each their own. Do note that the STR path will be weather based on the first 2 tiers of the trial only, afterwards your kills will be primarily on the day of the element. If you have that cool phone app, you can prepare for the trial on the day. Just something to think about. Good luck.

So the little time you have to play, you're going to spend it finding people to help you kill Kur and Isgebind for a weaker weapon.

And why would you have to check weather forecast for fire trials? I've never tried to do a fire trial by looking for fire weather. You only have to check weather for the first couple of trials. Do the rest only on fire days. If you want to know the exact time that Fire day is coming, refer to this calendar.

Like I said, if you don't have a lot of time, stick to Firmaments. If you have time to farm for an Isador, you have time to do a STR trial. If you have the money to buy Apaisante, you have the money to buy flame geodes. Sure, the times are not EXACTLY equivalent, but seriously, don't sell yourself short with the excuse that "I'm not an elite player." Good gear has nothing to do with elitism. It has a lot to do with knowing what to do and how to do it.

Here, I can even give you the baby steps.

Trial 164 - Go to Pashow Marshlands in the past and on the far west side of the map there is a channel that runs north and south. There are 3 groups of 3 leeches here. If you start from the south side and work your way north, there is a 10th leech to the east of the last group. Best way to get there is to warp from the Atmacite Refiner

Trial 165 - Go to the Labyrinth of Onzozo and kill the Mantras. You can always check weather quickly by taking the abyssea warp to Buburium Peninsula and pull out your Magian Specs. If you don't know what Magian Specs are - click here

From here, the rest of your trials can be done on fire days in abyssea. You should be able to knock out Trial 166 and 167 in one day very easily. You may even be able to get started on Trial 168 on the same day. Trial 169 is the only hard one because you can't really Charged Whisker burn those flans. I suggest you ask a friend or 2 to help if you have a low population server. Otherwise, try to team up with anyone else who may be doing flans on firesday. After that, it's all down hill. Vermin, Manticores, and Birds you can do all in one Firesday each.

Refer to Prothescar's CW guide. That's what I did anyway. I also had a BLM friend come with me which made it even easier.

Someone changed their tune, Peldin, you were actually telling them to buy an Apaisante not so long ago.

The gear you need to 'function' really depends on what the core of your gametime consists of, old content/soloing/whiskering/NM.
If you have extremely limited playtime and arent doing endgame stuff then what exactly are you fighting with your blu that you want better swords for?
Gear upgrades usually center around wanting to do a particular activity better, which would be.... ?

I would second getting an Isador, little effort in popping in and seeing if someone is spamming isgebind doesnt take long, and most people/groups toss them.

You could probably just go to the pop site and randomly find someone doing Isgebind and ask to join for the sword.

Tyrfing, Isador, or if the chance permits, Damphyr Sword from Ig-Alima, Swiftwing/Ephemeron, Sanus Ensis. These are all fairly quick, easy to get swords.

Kur and Isgebind typically take all of 15-20minutes tops, which is so much faster than doing any sword trials.

Based off of his limited play time, i would say that Isador is probably the most reliable option. Also, people like to gear their jobs better for more than just performing better in any particular activity; they do it to take pride in a job class they enjoy, and want to make better.

What's fun to do in FFXI that doesn't involve grinding gear anyways, when every event is designed to grind gear or get more "pimp". If you're doing something in XI that's not grind gear related, it's most likely helping another player/friend/lsmate grind their gear or get more pimp.

So you may as well do STR ._.

But yeah, Isador/prov sword is fast and easy solution.

I look at things at a relatively long term perspective. STR sword is not a weapon that you will replace in the foreseeable future. Apaisante and Isador are easily replaced.

I'm just talking from experience. 18 months ago, I thought Empyreans would NEVER be in the realm of possibilities for me. So I spent a lot of time and effort working on inferior weapons. When I finally was able to farm for Empyrean weapons, I realized I wasted a lot of time on other weapons.

I thought upgrading Almace to 90 was something I would never be interested in doing. Here I am right now at 35/75 horns after just one decent evening of farming (hi2u 30k sanguine blades).

Apparently reading comes very difficult for you.

Your accusation - you changed your tune. You suggested Apaisante
My response - I didn't change my tune, I suggested STR sword first.
Your stupidity - You didn't tell them to buy Apaisante?

Yes, I suggested renting Apaisante. My "tune" however suggested str sword. The "tune" of my next post emphasized more on the str sword.

So again, I never changed my tune. Are you done being confused yet?

Flame geodes on bismarck are roughly 80-100k each. The Apaisante is relatively cheap in comparison to buying 55 flame geodes, which at a high value, comes to 5.5mil.

You guys are like Fox News quoting Obama. Take the statement for what it means. I guess I have to take the time to break things down for you guys.

In this game, everyone has some sort of gil income. Obviously that varies from person to person. If you are sitting on only 500,000 gil, and your income is really low, you may technically have the money for Apaisante, but you aren't going to spend all your money on it (assuming my target audience and OP aren't HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE). But this isn't the case for most players. I assume the OP actually has more than 500k. I think that if he's willing to spend 500k on an Apaisante, then he's got the money to start building up flame geodes. I'm not trying to say price of Apaisante = price of 55 flame geodes.

I could've explained that all in my original post but I thought the meaning would've been clear enough. But apparently you'd rather play dumb and be like "ZOMG HE SAID APAISANTE = 55 FLAME GEODES LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL"

Get an Isador as a stopgap till you have the time or the will to do a STR sword or two. It's an investment though and given your low play time, you don't want to waste time investing in anything that isn't worth it.

Trials are annoying for some, but they are less annoying on blu.

No it doesn't work that way. Spending 500k on an inferior weapon is different from spending 5.5M on a better weapon. It depends on where a player want to use his/her resource. And that is the case for most player too, most players have "priority" for each job/weapon due to limited resource, low income or not. If BLU is just one of his job out of many, not high priority, then it isn't very realistic to spend 5.5M on a weapon when 500k can get the job done. Just because he may have 500k now, doesn't mean he will farm 5 more M on this job/sword. Maybe next 5M will go to other gear.

Quit acting dumb. If you can't understand my posts, then stop responding to them. This isn't the only thread where you can't grasp what I'm saying and so you try to argue against what you think I said. Just give it up. It's tiresome to have to respond to every one of your posts by saying "I didn't say that, learn to read please."

And I'm not sure where you get this 5.5 mil number comes from. The OP is from Leviathan. The price of flame geodes are 60k each there.
Can you multiply 60,000 x 55?
If you can, you will get 3,300,000. This is no where close to 5,500,000.

Apaisante on Leviathan is 750,000.

A few points:
- You should never try to buy all your geodes at once. This just drives the price up.
- You don't have to buy all 55 anyway. You will get some just from doing the trials themselves.

Bottom line - Unless you're only playing BLU for procs or CW burning, take some pride in your job and get a STR sword. Even a Shamshir +2 (no flame geodes) is a decent weapon to use and you can upgrade it with geodes as you get them. The STR is going to help every physical type of damage you do. The attack is going to benefit your TP and WS damage. Even if it takes you a long time because you have low play time, it's still going to be a good weapon. Even if you find a better main hand weapon in the next expansion, it will still be a great (if not best) option for your off hand.

Not saying STR path weapons aren't worth it because they are, but someone who has a limited play time might not even be able to get on during firesday for the majority of the time.

Its not easy to build a STR weapon when you can't get on during firesday.
