On the contrary I have known some very awesome people throughout my XI career 04-2012. Most of them I never met in RL (mostly due to vast distances between us) however I would still classify them as fantastic friends regardless of never meeting face to face.
Some of those relationships I've made are closer, and more trusting than many RL friendships.

I've actually experienced pretty much that, only a handful of people I really consider true friends from playing an MMO. The rest were just another hi and bye friend.

Well, this is rather reflective of real life, How many friends do you really have that are more than hi or bye or school or work friends?
No matter how good you are at anything, there is always someone better.
No matter how good you are at anything, there is always a flaw about you/your gear and it is the job of everyone else to call you out on it.

See my post on "Stone of Vision". When you need them they hardly drop. When you do not, they rain!!!

There will always be that 1 guy who when he quits, will sell everything and drop everything they cant sell. Delete their character, erase their content id's and uninstall their game before publicly declaring all of the above along with their intent to never play the game again...
