No but being aware of basic facts/the world around you does.
Subjective, I disagree. Knowing random facts you can spew out anytime some idiot comes to question your intelligence, doesn't automatically make you smart. Some people do forget that information, it happens when you don't use that info over a long period of time. With all the information readily available at our fingertips, its even less of a problem.
Agreed. But the majority of these aren't just random facts. I'm not all patriotic and ***, but Jesus these kids don't even know how many stars are on the flag. OR HOW MANY STATES THERE ARE. Stuff like that is, in my mind, unacceptable. Basic, common knowledge. Not asking what the capital of India is. Not asking to name all presidents in order. Just some basic knowledge.

Most of these questions alot of people can't answer and it certainly doesn't make them dumb.

I didn't watch the video, but I will say this. You can't really use something like that to get a proper demographic. If we go by videos like that alone, well Jay Leno proved to us that not a single person who has stepped foot in Universal Studios knows anything about American history.

Atleast they're "kids" here in Italy if you ask a politician things releted about the Italy and its history , well they do not even know when the Italy became and indipendednt repuplic.
Here we're ruled by a bounch of ignorants retards , not that this video is encouraging but they're still "kids"
So I'd let this "pass".

How much do Americans know about their neighbouring countries, much less countries in Europe.

For my research methods class, I did the following study on how influential other answers would be on a survey. The Psychology term is called social influence.

So I asked the following questions:

Who did Germany attack at the start of World War II? I put down the correct answer, Poland.

Then I asked how many toes on average are humans born with and I put down 9.

The last question was how many states there were in the United States. I put down 52 for this one.

The experiment was if people would go along with the bottom two answers since the first one was correct. Well the experiment was a major failure for one big reason.

Only about 20% of people knew that Poland was the correct answer for the first question.

About 75% got the states question right, with only a few people following along with the 52 answer and writing 51 instead.

These were all a random sampling of college students.

A lot of people obviously don't know simple facts, but of course it doesn't make them stupid. It just proves that they don't know one fact or don't care about that area.

Maybe I'm just too much of a Europhile/history nerd, but geography is so so simplistic to me. Then again, I have duel citizenship, and have done a lot of traveling in my life. I just think this kind of apathy perpetuates the "idiot American" stereotype.

Recommended reading to the kiddos: Mark Twain's 'The Innocence Abroad'.

Knowing or not knowing those questions wont effect anyone. Sure it will help you get a higher test score perhaps.

Seriously, half of that ***isn't completely relevant to your daily schedule so why does it matter?

Exactly. It's not like anything important happens anywhere else, right? If I need to know about it, the news will tell me. And history? FORGET THAT! Who cares about what happened already! People go around acting as if stuff that happened yesterday has some kind of impact on today. So stupid. Speaking of stupid: Math. If I am not near a computer, or a calculator, a good guess is good enough. If I added up all the time I wasted sitting in math classes from 1st grade through college, I'd find out I had wasted potato hours. And college... WTF... dude, I already went to school for like a hundred years, now they want me to go MORE? And get this: I have to pay THEM. So stupid.

One could argue that it affects us because we just had to sit and watch a video about something we already knew. Kids are everywhere, kids are stupid. Kids are everywhere and stupid.

Oh i never meant to say kids aren't stupid, just annoyed with snobs that think if someone dosnt know something they do it means they are dumb.

I think generalizing an entire group of people based on the acts of few is idiotic.

I graduated high school with people who couldn't point out their own country on a map. :/ Just saying...

I love to watch videos like this to see how many answers I get right. :D But if someone put me under pressure, stuck a microphone in my face, asked me something I wasn't expecting when I was off-guard? I'd probably say something stupid. That's mostly because I'm a bad test-taker in general. Ask me something on a test, I have a good chance of getting it wrong. Ask me the exact same question after I hand in the test, I have a good chance of getting it right.

The video is basic knowledge that most people should know, but like other folks have said -- asking 8 or 10 students in a school of hundreds of students isn't a remotely decent sample, and the videos don't show students who answered every question correctly because it would skew the point of the video.

Take it worth a grain of salt.

These questions are pretty easy and I would hope most upper classmen in high school can answer them correctly.

As for this argument, 8 hours of a students daily schedule is learning about the world around them and where they come from (to some degree). In any case, they are still capable of becoming productive individuals later in life. They are just kids but that doesn't mean we have to set the bar low... at least they learned some humility.

@Sagiaurex, come on dude, I get the history rant but this is basic stuff. As for the math thing, I resent that! :) I will link to maddox for a counter argument.

I get your point there as far as setting the bar low xD
