So this morning my computer had some little update it mentioned when i was shutting down the computer, like it has so many times before. I clicked on the thing saying "download updates and shutdown" and came back to the computer some hours later.
When i came back it started installing them and all that like normal and when it was all good and done it booted up to the desktop... and every single file, song, setting, cookie, etc. was deleted. My computer was just like it was when i bought it x.x but it didn't give the little intro video or anything.
I'm wondering if anyone knows what the hell happened? XD There wasn't anything on the computer of extreme importance that can't be replaced, but its still a pain in the ***. My computer is a dell and windows vista... it was a dell update that seemed to lead to this, so if anyone has any info that could help i'd really appreciate it ^^;

Since it would seem its propitiatory to Dell, I would call their technical support. Maybe the computer really did crash and Dell has some sort of autorecovery feature that puts back the factory OS/settings? Who knows with those OEM computers.

Can't do much to help you as this seems to be a manufacturer issue related to Dell.
Protip: Go custom next time ._.

Specify what update it was and you may get actual answers. Not enough info to even say what happened.
I run a Dell XPS w/ Vista and I haven't had that problem.

Vista isn't that bad. It only sucked because many computers weren't built for it's greedy system resource hogging tendencies at the time of its release, but if you got something decent it really isn't that horrible.
Anyways, to make 100% sure, if you have another PC around the house or a friend's computer you can use, take out your hard drive and attach it to that to see if your files are still in tact.

I had to borrow a computer while mine was at the repair store, worst weekend ever (computer wise). It had vista on it, and not only did 50 warnings show up everytime you wanted to do something, but everytime a warning came up the screen "blinked" and kicked me off the game. And aparently 3 GB RAM is not enough to run FFXI, because randomly it gave me a message saying that there's not enough memory and POL has to be shut down.
God im glad to have my own computer back, even though it sounds like a nuclear powerplant!

True, that's why 7 > all.
Functionality of vista, with the lightweight of XP.

W7 is a patch for a *** patch for a great OS, its sad that people think its a Godsend when in actuality its nothing more than a patch of a malfunctioning OS that was suppose to "replace" XP.

Oh oh this reminded me of something that really pisses me off.... They gave people that bought Vista a free or cheap cant remember which upgrade to 7. But only if you bought it in a certain time frame.
When I looked into gettting myself a copy to rep my horrid copy of Vista Ultimate, I came to find out I missed the cut off and bought it too early.
So the people that bought it first trusting microsoft and paying the higher original prices got ***, while the dumbasses that has just bought it shortly before 7's release and didnt have to pay out thew *** for it get thier money back.
Gears have been ground /endrant

The PC died because you used to love it with porno videos all over before FFXI. So it got fustrated and did it with the last RMT /tell bot script and thought it get paid 1mil in digital money, when it came to find out that code for 10% was actually a virus. It wanted it bare back without its 'firewall'.
Lession to be learned: keep some type of porno on it to make it happy XD
On a serious note, contact dell and deal with their lame support that they read from a book. However if you got the extra cash, take it to GeekSquad. They're better than DELL support. imo anyway.
Edit: Also After Googleing DELL+CRASH+VISTA= SPAMS worth of info and support about it on different dells. if you can mention what type of dell it is, maybe i can find something.

Your story reminds me of what happened to my boyfriend last night. He installed an updated for his PC and once it was done it crashed his computer and corrupted a ton of files, including his POL ones. We seemed to think it was either some sort of virus, or an update that wasn't actually compatible with his PC.

I'm not sure if this seems like a reason, but it's possible that during the restart a key may have been hit to start into the recovery console.
Does anyone else live with you?
It may have been on a screen and someone could have just pushed "next ok I agree, whatever get off this."
Typically that would be impossible unless it indeed was a virus or it was somehow restarted into the recovery console and someone just clicked ***.
Just my 2 cents :D
